A month ago, a little solo record from Adrianne Lenker titled abysskiss was released. And despite the fact that you’ve seen coverage all over this site, perhaps it still flew under your radar. For as truly great as the album is, it seems to be getting a little overshadowed by other recent releases. But don’t let that fool you into thinking this isn’t an album worth standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other greats from the year. Because although it seems like a low-stakes, somber acoustic LP, there’s something awe-inspiring about the way in which Lenker writes songs. So to further push this album out to more ears, today we’ve been generously gifted a great new video for the single “symbol.”
“symbol” was one of the early pre-release singles for abysskiss. And it’s not hard to see why it was chosen as a single because it is simply one of the best songs on the entire album. Throughout the short running time of abysskiss, Lenker mostly plays it low-key with sparsity, never adding much more than an acoustic guitar and her voice. But on “symbol” there is some minimal electronic percussion that gives the track a flair of mystique. Her voice even gets layered out a little with some skittering backing vocals. As a whole piece, it showcases Lenker’s confidence in her ability to make just enough tweaks to craft a unique, eerie, moody atmosphere.
The video for “symbol” mostly seems a little at odds with the song’s overall feeling. We get a lot of shots of strangers having fun on a boardwalk while Lenker wanders about. But ultimately, the visuals give off a more comforting feeling, giving the song itself a fresh perspective. Give it a watch below.
