In 2016, indie-folk musician Maria Taylor started up her own label called Flower Moon Records. She planned on putting out some new solo work on the label as well as reissuing past albums and bringing in new artists. The label has already put out some reissues, a great new compilation, and a new Maria Taylor solo LP. And now they’ve brought in Taylor’s old project Azure Ray to release their new EP Waves.
Azure Ray is the dreamy folk duo of Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink. The project started up way back in 2001 and wound up gaining more traction with their move to Omaha’s Saddle Creek Records. The band haven’t released any new material since 2012’s As Above So Below EP. But they got back together about a year ago for a reunion show. And when some reels of their debut album were sent to them, it proved to be the right time to write and record some new songs together.
In a press release, Maria and Orenda stated:
“This EP was about revisiting what Azure Ray has meant to us – and felt like to the listener – over the last 18 years. So for the last few months we’ve been demoing songs back and forth over email and Facetime between Omaha and Los Angeles, until this August when we packed up a car and drove out to a house in Joshua Tree to record. These songs are both a yearning and nostalgia for the Azure Ray of the past, and new perspectives on how and why we make music – with 18 years of love, life, and loss in between. It’s a record we’ve been aching to write – without even knowing it – just like the first one almost 2 decades ago. So today, we’re excited to share with you our favorite Azure Ray songs in years.”
Waves is due out October 26. Ahead of the release, Azure Ray have shared the EP’s first single “Palindrome.” You can head right here to give a listen to the song. Below you’ll find the album art and tracklist for Waves.
