Spanning flavors from sixties proto-punk to gospel tent revival, the Due Diligence is a New York rock band centered around the songwriting and live-wire antics of Isaac Gillespie. The son of a preacher and a trial lawyer, Gillespie (who has collaborated with Shakey Graves and Landlady’s Adam Schatz) explores personal issues in wry and often funny ways in his writing. The songs on Life Is Hard were written over an eight year period, bookended by the experiences of moving to the biggest of cities as an impressionable young man and the death of Gillespie’s grandmother who had left that city as a poor single mother many decades back. Life Is Hard provides a trash-gospel meditation on the tug of war between the lusts that drive us and the deaths to which we’re driven.
