Double Door Inn Anniversary Reunion Party
Dec 16 @ 7:00 pm

Lenny Federal Band, Randy Franklin & the Sardines, The Monday Night Allstars

For over 43 years, the Double Door Inn was more than an old house on Charlottetowne Avenue. It was recognized as one of the oldest blues music venues in the United States, bringing in musicians of all genres to Charlotte, NC. It was the place that you went to hang out on Friday afternoon, or Saturday night. To meet old friends, and make new ones.

What had once been the house built by the Wearn family, one of the prominent families in Charlotte during the early 20th centuries, become the home of the Charlotte music scene, and the place where owner Nick Karres oversaw countless nights of music and memories.

While we cannot bring it back, this show is a homecoming for the many that had the Double Door Inn pass through them, just as much as we passed through it. On the week that the venue would have celebrated its 45th anniversary, we bring together two of the most famous names in the Double Door¹s history. The Lenny Federal Band, and the Monday Night All Stars.

We also welcome back Nick Karres and his family, who have been part of our own extended families for many years.

Gather, return, and let the music play on.

Renelvis (free show)
Dec 20 @ 9:00 pm

Renelvis emerged in Charlotte during the early 90s, claiming to be just another Elvis Presley impersonator. While he may not look or talk like your typical Memphis bluesman, all one has to do is listen to him belt out “Hound Dog” or watch him swivel his hips, and you’ll be convinced that The King is back.

Rene will be performing a mix of his original songs and some Elvis favorites, as well as telling stories from his book.

The Sammies CD Release Bash, with Parker Gispert from The Whigs
Dec 21 @ 9:00 pm

The Sammies are proud to announce the release of their 4th studio album Bonfire Nightclub.  Recorded in 2017 at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium in Kernersville NC, and coming in at just under 40 minutes, it harkens back to their eponymous first album.  In part due to the fact that The Sammies enlisted famed indie rock producer John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth) to produce/mix/engineer the session, just as he did on that first album.  Brothers Huntley again fire back and forth at one another, taking turns on vocal duties, and at times adding a little “blood harmony” to the mix.

Formed in Charlotte by way of Wadesboro NC, The Sammies have played hundreds of shows all across the United States, from Claremont CA to Boston MA, SXSW to Sundance, and everywhere in between.  With songs placed in movies (Employee of the Month) and TV (Friday Night Lights, Entourage), and albums available for streaming or however you take your music now, come check out the band that Bill Murray would give 3 thumbs up to had he met them.

Pat McGee, Ernie Halter
Dec 28 @ 8:00 pm

“I never expected any of these legends to say yes, but I figured it was worth a shot,” says PAT MCGEE about his star-studded new self-titled album. “If nothing else, I wanted them to know that I felt they would have been the perfect band for these songs. I have never been a guy that asked for favors or perks in this business, but on this project I definitely swung for the fences and thought to myself, ‘Why not? The worst they can say is ‘no’.”

Fortunately, the iconic players he had hoped to work with gave him a resounding, “Yes!” The dream team McGee assembled includes musical legends Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Danny Kortchmar, and Jeff Pevar (nicknamed “The Section”). Other notable musicians such as Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Blues Traveler’s John Popper, Train’s Pat Monahan, Punchbrother’s Gabe Witcher as well as Pat McGee’s own band contributed to the album’s sound.

Recorded in Los Angeles in 2014, Pat McGee was influenced by the classic albums of the 1970s that were spun in his childhood home. “I was inspired to write a record that was not based on a ‘single’ but on the wholeness of the complete album,” Pat explains. “I was at a friend’s house, listening to what I thought was someone’s playlist on an iPod. When I realized they were spinning full albums on vinyl, I was blown away. The very next day, I decided to buy a record player and picked up the ten records that lit the fire in me to start playing music, including seminal records by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash.”

Channeling the vintage warmth of those recordings, he began writing an album that would have the same timeless quality of singer/songwriter rock from the Laurel Canyon scene of the early 70s.

Once McGee had written enough material for an album, he began to wonder what would happen if he reached out to the musicians who helped to shape his ear. An impossible task, he thought, but he decided to throw caution to the wind and go for it. One by one, the pieces started to fit together and each of them accepted his offer. As though the universe had always intended for this record to be made. “You could tell when we got to the studio that all these guys just loved playing with each other,” McGee recalls. “From the moment that we played the opening warm-up casual jam, I knew that this was going to blow away anything that I could have ever dreamed.”

From the guitar intro of opening track “Bad Idea,” the natural connection between the players was obvious, sounding much more like a band who had been playing together for decades instead of being assembled for just one record. In lieu of the modern process of painstakingly tracking each individual instrument, the band jammed. “I would show them my song idea and they would ask to hear the meaning of the lyric, and 10 minutes later, we had a take on tape,” he says, still in awe of that process. “We never tracked more than two or three takes before moving onto the next song. In all of these moments, I felt like I was witnessing the creation of an iconic classic rock guitar moment, drum part or bass line– it was happening right before my very eyes. And the fact that these guys were making it happen on songs that I wrote is just still so unbelievable to me.”

Of Good Nature New Year’s Eve Party with Porch 40, Rare Creatures, The Business People
Dec 31 @ 9:00 pm

Charlotte NC alt-rockers, Of Good Nature, have built a strong buzz with quick attention to their newly released music along with a steady wave of tour dates. Their fusion-friendly approach and openness to explore a range of styles has lead to a highly accessible sound which has recently spread like wildfire across festivals, cruises, blogs, and radio stations. “Take Me Anywhere” has been featured on Sirius XM’s The Pulse, while “Feels Right” and “Be The Day” are streamed on a handful of popular Spotify playlists including Happy Songs For The Office, Easy Like Sunday Morning, and Reggae Summer Beach.

The band’s high-energy live show has caught on across the United States. OGN was invited for a second appearance aboard Train’s Sail Across The Sun Cruise and has supported headliners Sublime with Rome, Slightly Stoopid, Dirty Heads, George Clinton, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Gym Class Heroes, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Blues Traveler, Common Kings, Steel Pulse, and many more. They’ve also received recognition for their past studio work, seeing their debut album, Just Add Water, won Indie-Ville’s Reggae Album of the Year and sophomore album Life Worth Livin, debuted at #5 on iTunes Reggae Albums Charts.

Up there with the hardest grinding bands in the nation, the group’s seemingly never-ending tour schedule continues with the announcement of a nationwide tour, celebrating the success of their recording collaborations with Danny Kalb (Beck, Ben Harper, Foster the People, The Movement) at White Star Sound in Charlottesville VA.  The good vibes of the new singles are hitting hard with OGN fans, unveiling whats to expect of the full-length release dropping Spring 2019.

Jamorah at Smokey Joe’s Cafe
Dec 31 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm
Jamorah is made up of four musicians that love to jam. Influenced by many genres, they get together on Mondays at Smokey Joe’s Cafe in Charlotte NC to relax and have fun playing the music they love the most.
They have bands of their own, and live lives on their own, but on Mondays they release their inner souls and let the music play the band.
Guests come on a regular basis and they allow the band to open up and let the instruments do the talking.
Guitar, Keys, Bass, Drums are the root and are joined by percussion, horns, and more to make it a full sound.
Expect to hear Rock, Blues, Jazz, Reggae, and Latin styles. Of course, they all share the love for the psychedelic sounds of Jerry Garcia and the mastery of Frank Zappa which makes it for an interesting medley of jams. When the ‘latin mafia’ show up with percussion, there is a latin vibe much like Santana.

King’s X, Sound and Shape
Jan 18 @ 8:00 pm
KING’S X
Dug Pinnick – Bass/Vocals
Jerry Gaskill – Drums/Vocals
Ty Tabor – Guitar/Vocals

King’s X is an American rock band that combines progressive metal, funk and soul with vocal arrangements influenced by gospel, blues, and British Invasion rock groups. The band’s lyrics are largely based on the members’ struggles with religion and self-acceptance. King’s X was ranked No. 83 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.

Since being signed to Megaforce Records in 1987, King’s X has released twelve studio albums, two official live albums, and several independent releases. The band’s most recent studio album, XV, was released in 2008 on the InsideOut Music label. Since leaving Atlantic Records, following the release of Ear Candy in 1996, King’s X has released albums through Metal Blade Records, InsideOut Music and independently. Each member of the group has recorded several solo albums and have made numerous guest appearances on other artists’ albums, as well as participated in numerous compilation projects. Doug Pinnick and Ty Tabor also have many albums released with side bands in which they participate.

Early in their major label career the band secured opening slots on arena tours, including opening for bands like Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Scorpions, Pearl Jam and Mötley Crüe as well as the Woodstock ’94 festival. To this day, they continue to tour and perform live.
The spiritual nature of the band’s lyrics, particularly on their first four albums, has often led to them being labeled a Christian rock band, a label the members have rejected.

Popa Chubby
Jan 25 @ 8:00 pm

Twenty five years of hard rocking blues

Popa Chubby, born Ted Horowitz, has been hard rocking the blues in his fierce and soulful way for more than 25 years. Over the course of a career that dates back to 1994, he has been a force of to be reckoned with on the guitar, and his tempestuous, soulful playing has never been more powerful. An imposing figure with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performance style he describes as “the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, and Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson,” Popa Chubby is an endearing character who is one of the genre’s most popular figures.

His career has always been about moving forward and carving a place for himself in the imposing terrain of the music business, overcoming odds to continue growing and maturing as a creative force. He has built a constantly increasing base of fans across the world, where in many territories he is a star. A native New Yorker, Horowitz’s first gigs were in the NYC punk scene as a guitarist for what he reflects was a “crazy Japanese special effects performance artist in a kimono called Screaming Mad George who had a horror-movie inspired show.” Right from the start he was immersed in rock ‘n’ roll as theater, and learned from George and others playing CBGB’s at the time that included the Ramones, the Cramps, Richard Hell, whose band, the Voidoids he joined that rock ‘n’ roll should be dangerous. He reflects, “Musicians like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols weren’t just bands. They were a threat to society.”

The Blues however was the foundation of his playing style. He recalls, “Since I’d grown up on Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin, when I started playing blues in New York clubs I understood that the blues should be dangerous, too. It wasn’t just from playing in punk bands. Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters were dangerous men. They’d cut or shoot you if they thought it was necessary, and Little Walter packed a gun and wouldn’t hesitate to use it. That danger is a real part of the Blues and I keep it alive in my music.”

Popa Chubby is his own man for better or worse. He reflects, “I’m living in a wild time, and that is where the inspiration is drawn from. There are my issues, but the picture is much bigger than me and my situation. Everything is breaking down in the world. The lines are being redefined. We all need something.”

Windhand, Genocide Pact
Jan 31 @ 8:00 pm

For a band who traffic in measured, unhurried riffage, Richmond’s WINDHAND have moved awfully quickly over the last few years. Founded in 2009, the VA quintet have been making waves since the release of their 2010 practice space demo, a two-track CD that garnered the band comparisons to artists like Electric Wizard, The Devil’s Blood, and Black Sabbath. That auspicious start was further realized in March 2012 when the band released their self-titled debut, which quickly became an underground hit and sold out of multiple vinyl presses in a matter of months.

A year later, the band officially signed to Relapse Records. After a steady touring schedule, the band collaborated with Richmond brethren Cough on a split entitled Reflection of the Negative, which was released on Relapse in April 2013. Pitchfork deemed the split WINDHAND’s “best music to date,” and the record’s positive critical reception helped pave the way for WINDHAND to release the highly anticipated album Soma in September 2013. Stereogum, Spin, and the LA Weekly featured Soma prominently on their overall best-of lists. The album was heavily represented in countless metal publications including Revolver, Invisible Oranges, MetalSucks, and Metal Injection. Rolling Stone, NPR, and Pitchfork all took note of Soma as well; the former considered the album the third-best metal release of 2013.

Soma was no flash-in-the-pan internet phenomenon. In 2013 and 2014, the band embarked on a series of support and headlining tours across North America, Europe, and Australia, sharing the stage with the likes of Sleep, High on Fire, Dead Meadow and Kvelertak. In addition, Windhand appeared at major festivals including Roadburn, SXSW, Scion Rock Fest, Day of the Shred and Maryland Deathfest. Windhand also took the time in October 2014 to follow up Soma with a brief two-track Halloween split alongside Swedish doomsters Salem’s Pot (released on Riding Easy Records). Noisey liked the record so much that they declared the band “must have definitely sold their souls for their new split.”

Donna the Buffalo
Feb 1 @ 8:00 pm

Donna the Buffalo offers everything you want in a roots band — songs that matter, a groove that makes you dance, an audience that spans generations, and a musical voice that evokes a sense of community.

Dance in the Street, their first new album in five years, captures the dynamic energy that has earned the band the love and respect of their fans, “the Herd”, for thirty years.

Donna The Buffalo is well known for their lyrics about human potential and community. Throughout Dance in the Street, Jeb Puryear and Tara Nevins, the band’s co-founders, share songs of social commentary and self empowerment. “We feel the album provides an enjoyable ride between the general and the personal, from both male and female perspectives,” says Puryear.

Puryear took it upon himself to write a topical song after a friend slyly commented, “We could use some songs like you used to write.” That off-handed remark led directly to “Dance in the Street,” which falls somewhere between Bob Dylan and Bob Marley.
