The Underground Open Mic: June Edition
Jun 17 @ 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Come join us for The Underground Open Mic. All performers, styles, genres, and skill level are welcome to signup. Each month will have a featured artist.

Proceeds to benefit the UNDERGROUND Mobile Art Gallery.
The UNDERGROUND Mobile Art Gallery will bring amazing visual, musical, poetic, graphic, and historical works from local and accessible black artist right to Charlotte lower-income neighborhoods.

Our goal is to put an interactive Renaissance style art movement right in the heart of the hood, thus giving the youth in Charlotte’s at risk neighborhoods (where there’s mad talent, but nowhere to cultivate it) the opportunity to work with local artists, musicians, writers, gardeners, and historians on their own turf!

‘EDUCATION BEGINS AT HOME…BUILD COMMUNITIES, NOT MORE CONDOS!’

*Petra’s is a 21+ private club. Please be expected to provide a valid ID to enter. If you are not already a member please also be expected to pay a $1 annual membership fee upon arrival.

UPSTATE
Jun 20 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

For Upstate, the last few years have been a time of profound exploration and self-discovery. As the band knocked off milestone after milestone on the road, their sound, their lineup, and even their name all underwent dramatic metamorphoses. Challenging and thrilling all at once, those changes have finally culminated in the sextet’s dazzling new album, a collection that showcases both their remarkable growth and their adventurous blend of folk, R&B, jazz, gospel, and rock and roll.

Recorded primarily over six days at the Clubhouse studio in Rhinebeck, NY, ‘Healing’ is the band’s first release with new member Allison Olender, their first with four contributing songwriters, and their first since shortening their name from Upstate Rubdown. It’s also their first project to be produced by Wood Brothers percussionist Jano Rix, who helped the group embrace their transformation and lean in to their unique lineup without sacrificing any of the gorgeous harmonies, eclectic arrangements, and unforgettable performances that have defined the band since their earliest days.

Upstate first emerged from New York’s Hudson Valley in 2015 with their critically acclaimed debut, ‘A Remedy.’ The Poughkeepsie Journal raved that the group “need[s] nothing more than their voices to channel rhythm and stoke your emotions,” while Chronogram hailed their “infectiously sunny organic stew,” and The Alt called them “toe-tapping, contagious, and fun.” The album earned the band festival performances from Mountain Jam to Fresh Grass, as well as a slew of national headline dates and support slots with everyone from The Felice Brothers and Phox to Marco Benevento and Cory Henry.

Harriet Brown

Harriet Brown

Sultry r&b solo artist Harriet Brown is back with a new batch of fully-realized future funk, a slow-burning dispatch from a dayglo dance floor.

Mall of Fortune is his second full-length album, an airtight meditation on anxiety, paranoia and indecisiveness – decision paralysis and the free-flowing guilt that follows.

The album was produced, arranged, composed and performed by Harriet Brown. He plays every note of every instrument, sings every come-hither falsetto flight – save for two felicitous features from singers Ana Roxanne and Felicia Douglass. Pressing play is stepping into a damn-near singular vision, a world apart.

And what a world it is. This album is 14 songs of meticulous and introspective soul from LA’s foremost funk documentarian. Where his debut album was more cosmic, more spiritual, this follow-up is grounded and personal, driven by day-to-day experiences and self-imposed solitude. The best albums sound like emotions registered in real time, then rendered for maximum impact.

Album opener ‘Window Shopping’ lays it out clear – ‘Baby what you want, what you spend your life on / when it’s time oh what kind of fortune are you bringing back home?’ The weight of each decision can cause conniptions, but choosing nothing is no choice at all.

‘Shower Up, Saddle Up’ is a bucket of water in the face, the moment you shake it off and find peace with your dime piece, new cologne and a time piece – you stop worrying what people think and hit the town for some me time.

As personal as the album is, its also a rumination on the deep murky macro mess we’re all in. ‘Cinnamon Sky’ wonders how LA can be this beautiful and this polluted, a sun-soaked biohazard.

‘Hardwalkin’ takes on our growing police state, surveillance and the fear we feel around people who are supposed to protect and serve.

This is a sonically and emotionally eclectic album, a ‘Sign O’ The Times’ for our times. It’s a stew of r&b, soul, funk, and free experimentation, both dense and expansive. Repeated listenings rewarded.

You’ll walk away from Mall of Fortune craving the smell of the food court, the stickiness of the arcade. But no matter what you’re in the mall for, pull your check out, hit the checkout, we close in five minutes.

PRÓXIMA PARADA w/ Little Bird
Jul 20 @ 9:00 pm
PRÓXIMA PARADA
Próxima Parada blends soulful melody with hard-hitting rhythm into a sound distinctly their own. They’ve released several full-length albums independently and, with new songs written, are preparing to record their next.

Starting in 2012 as a group of college friends wanting to extend their dynamic to their community in San Luis Obispo, CA, they never dreamed that their passion would reach a global audience through being placed on Spotify playlists, that they’d perform at beautiful historic venues and music festivals, that their songs would earn awards, that their music would soothe and uplift people around the world. Their last single, Time In A Circle, currently has over 1.1 million plays on Spotify alone.

Próxima Parada is Nick Larson (vocals, keys, guitar), Kevin Middlekauff (bass), Josh Collins (guitar), and Aaron Kroeger (drums).

The Temptations & The Four Tops
Oct 27 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Returning by popular demand, Motown legends The Temptations & The Four Tops are coming back to Charlotte for a legendary night of all their favorite hits!

For more than fifty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world.

“The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater”.

The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turned the guys into stars.

One of Motown’s most consistent hit-makers, The Four Tops are among the most stable and consistent vocal groups.

Their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving” in 1964, made them stars and their sixties track record on the label is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade. Their songs, soulful and bittersweet, were across-the-board successes. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” a no. 1 R&B and Pop smash in 1965, is one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers.

In 1990, with 24 Top 40 pop hits to their credit, The Four Tops were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Though they would no longer have hits on record, the group continued to be a hit in concert, touring incessantly, a towering testament to the enduring legacy of the Motown Sound they helped shape and define.
