Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band
Oct 11 @ 8:00 pm

Funk has a new spokes band, and that band is Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band. Known for their raucous live shows and outrageous stage wear, the Booty Band’s sound is a mix of deep funk, high energy rock, plus a little old school rap and soul thrown in for good measure.

Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band formed in 2002 and went through a few incarnations before culminating into the dynamic ensemble it is today. Mary Frances “Mama Funk” creates a sultry platform for her keyboard and keytar playing with her powerhouse vocals. Laying down the bottom is Ben Bjorlie on bass, Derrick ‘Dr Ock’ Johnson on trombone and Jonathan Cole on saxaphone. JP “Smoke Machine” Miller soars on guitar, and Lee “Insta Funk” Allen drives it all forward on drums. The six-piece funk rock outfit fuels their high-energy show with original compositions, triumphant horns, laid-back grooves and heavy backbeats.

The repertoire covers the gamut from emotionally-charged ballads to energetic, danceable grooves. The song choices are anything but ordinary and, along with the original compositions, appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners. Beartooth –The Disease Tour
Oct 12 @ 7:30 pm

Columbus, OH hardcore band Beartooth has announced a North American headlining fall tour. “The Aggressive Tour” presented by The Noise kicks off October 2 in Chicago, IL and ends with a hometown show at Express Live! In Columbus, OH on November 11. For tickets and on-sale info go to Beartooth Tickets. Support will be announced soon.

To celebrate the tour, Beartooth has released the video for “Hated”. “Hated” is the new single off Aggressive (Red Bull Records), which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative Chart and No. 3 on the Billboard Rock Chart last month. Front man Caleb Shomo wrote, performed and produced the album’s 12 tracks, which have much in common with stomping metalcore as old-school punk, combining circle pit-inducing bangers with soaring choruses and bridging raw authentic intensity with accessibility. Early praise for the album has been effusive: Alternative Press called it “a compelling statement for the validity of heavy rock music in 2016,” and Kerrang declared “This is a record positively fueled by aggression, bolstered by its sense of injustice and raised high on an instinctual need to prove its heavyweight pedigree. The sound of a band showing their strength.”

Rare Creatures w/ Grayson Foster
Oct 12 @ 7:30 pm

Formed initially as an experiment in diverse songwriting, Rare Creatures has grown into a full on rock spectacle. Their sound navigates between heavy synth rock and melodic acoustic rhythms seamlessly from song to song, switching it up around every corner. Influenced by bands from Alt-J to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, with some ethnic spices sprinkled in for good measure. The group is fronted by Coleman Sawyer on vocals and guitar, with Hugh Camp on bass and synthesizer, Aaron Reece on lead guitar, and Logan Crank banging the drums. Their debut album was released on July 27th, 2018.

Grayson Foster is so totally indie it’s totally not even funny. Hailing from Charlotte, NC and currently living in Nashville, TN Grayson is writing all kinds of music but keeping the most honest and personal music for this project…

He spins J-MAY, Bahamas, and The Postal Service on the reg and thinks that tremolo pedals are pretty chill.

Big Something, The Wormholes
Oct 12 @ 8:00 pm

A 6 piece powerhouse with a sound that is both unique and timeless, Big Something fuses elements of rock, pop, funk, and improvisation to take listeners on a journey through a myriad of musical styles. It’s no secret why this group has quickly become one of the most exciting new bands to emerge from the  Southeast. Soaring guitars, EWI (electronic wind instrument), synths, horns and alluring vocal hooks rise to the top of their infectious collection of songs and represent a sound that has caught the ears of such revered stalwarts as Umphrey’s McGee, Moon Taxi, Galactic, moe., Robert Randolph, and even The B52s, who have all tapped Big Something as direct support.

Recently, the band released their 5th studio album The Otherside on April 20th, 2018 as a follow up to their 2017 album Tumbleweed. The Otherside was recorded at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC with the help of Grammy-nominated producer and Carolina Music Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient- John Custer (Corrosion of Conformity) who has produced all 5 of the bands albums. On The Otherside, Big Something continues to build upon the post-apocalyptic peyote trip imagery from Tumbleweed, concluding the story of a nomad who has made it to the other side of his journey wandering through the night towards a desert sunrise. The album also showcases a different musical side of the band with a heavier, more focused and soulful collection of 8 songs including ‘Smoke Signal,’ and ‘Wildfire.’ Big Something is Nick MacDaniels (vocals, guitar), Casey Cranford (sax, EWI), Jesse Hensley (lead guitar), Ben Vinograd (drums), Doug Marshall (bass), Josh Kagel (keys, trumpet), and Rhett Huffman (keys).

As Ambassadors of Cosmic Propaganda, The Wormholes fuse art and music to explore the symbiotic nature of the universe. This curated experience is an opportunity to transport minds to a realm where the illusion of ego is shattered.

The band consists of multi-instrumentalists Ben Verner, Chris Dameron, and Chris Walters. Blending guitar, bass and drums with synthesizers and sequencers, The Wormholes experimental vibe is a tasty blend of heavy, melodic, and mellow. Space Pop.

Denzel Curry — TA1300 Tour 2018
Oct 12 @ 8:00 pm
Gaelic Storm
Oct 12 @ 8:00 pm

It’s hard to imagine a band just coming into their own after 20 years of success, but that’s exactly what makes a true anomaly. This multi-national, Celtic juggernaut grows stronger with each live performance, and as you can imagine, after two decades and over 2000 shows, it is a true force to be reckoned with. With their latest release, Go Climb a Tree, their music has never sounded more representative of themselves as musicians and as live performers.

The band attributes their continued success to their fanatic audience, and it’s a well-diversified crowd for sure. The country-music folks adore the storytelling, the bluegrass-heads love the instrumentals, Celtic fans love their devotion to tradition, and the rockers simply relish the passion they play their instruments with. Each band member, in their own way, expresses a deep gratitude for their fans, but it’s best summed up in the words of Patrick Murphy: “The fans are the ones that have given us this life. We’re here for them.”

David Rosales & His Band of Scoundrels with A Different Thread
Oct 12 @ 10:30 pm

David Rosales & His Band of Scoundrels

“…invoking elements of R&B, gospel, rock, and western influences to dust things up with a helping of soulful grit.“ -POPmatters

“…sweetly optimistic and fun-loving…” -Guitar World Magazine

DAVID ROSALES & HIS BAND OF SCOUNDRELS are a Huntington Beach, California-based outfit with a sound that draws on the wide-open spaces of the Southwest and the smooth textures of the Pacific Ocean to seamlessly weave an alluring landscape of American roots music. A sound that pairs well with contemporaries they have shared the stage with in Ben Harper, Matt Costa, The White Buffalo, Donavon Frankenreiter and Steep Canyon Rangers.

On the heels of his Spring 2018 debut album, BRAVE ONES, Rosales brings his rich baritone vocal and hopeful melodies to the forefront in what the Raleigh Metro hails as ‘… a toe-tapping collection of songs perfect for a Sunday afternoon spent beachside.’

It’s impossible to deny the warmth and ease of Rosales’ songwriting prowess throughout the 11 tracks as he seamlessly blends his vintage sonic tastes with fresh vision. Crediting his love of classic Rhythm & Blues and Country & Western singers Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, coupled with his admiration for modern day troubadours the likes of Ryan Adams, Amos Lee, Nathaniel Rateliff and Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) as being influential in the writing and recording process.

BRAVE ONES marks Rosales’ third collaboration with Co-Producer, friend and Donavon Frankenreiter sideman, Matt Grundy. Looking for a change in scenery, the duo recorded at Super Bloom Studios —a log cabin studio that rests on the edge of the wind-swept expanse known as the Mojave Desert in the shadow of California’s Mount San Antonio. The duo thrived in this remote location, which became an unequivocal inspiration for the recording sessions.
****************

British/American duo, A Different Thread deliver an intoxicating amalgamation of Beatlesque folk rock meets Gillian Welch dark country.

From the rolling hills of Staffordshire to the Appalachian Mountains, A Different Thread’s original songs are inspired by the music that has crisscrossed the Atlantic Ocean over the generations in true folk fashion. Robert Jackson (from Lichfield, England) and Alicia Best (from Durham North Carolina, USA) first met two years ago while busking in Galway, Ireland. They didn’t even know each others names, all they knew was that their voices fit together like missing pieces of the same puzzle. Their chance meeting sparked a musical journey across the UK, Europe, the US, and even to Guatemala and back; touring and living on the road while cultivating their own unique blend of country, blues and folk (or as they call it: British-Americana.)

Their debut album ‘On A Whim’ (release date September 13th 2018, Cat’s Cradle Carrboro NC) was recorded last May at Arbor Ridge Studios in Chapel Hill with producer Jeff Crawford (Mandolin Orange, Mipso, Josh
Moore,) featuring local NC talent including Omar Ruiz-Lopez from Violet Bell and Rusty Smith who plays frequently with Four Tops and The Temptations, among others! Back in the states for their ‘On A Whim Tour’ they are gigging up and down the East Coast, (other NC shows include Isis Music Hall on the 3rd of October, The Kraken in Chapel Hill at Jonathan Byrd’s Shake Sugaree Americana Residency on the 10th of October, and the Haw River Ballroom on the 13th of October for
‘Oktoberfest’.)

ANTiSEEN 35 Year ANTiVERSARY, with Josephus and the George Jonestown Massacre, Taped Fist
Oct 13 @ 8:00 pm

Long before it was fashionable, somewhere in the red clay rolling hills of rural North Carolina where time stands still and mass media culture merely flys over, a young Jeff Clayton was stewing up a mash of crazed ideas inspired by late night horror flicks, Saturday morning wrestling and the scratchy old records of Alice Cooper and Black Oak Arkansas. It was a potent and hazardous mix that, when given the blasting cap of punk rock, ignited one of the most infamous and iconic bands in rock & roll; ANTiSEEN.

Now, over thirty years later, Clayton still leads the charge – a bloodstained barnstorm of southern fried punk rock fury. Times and taste may change, but ANTiSEEN does not; diesle-fume piss and vinegar – and damn all the rest. What was once topical has long since become dated… But not ANTiSEEN.

Diamonds and Whiskey with special guest Gladshot
Oct 13 @ 10:30 pm

Where the swamps of Louisiana meet the hills of North Carolina, a new sound emerges.

Diamonds and Whiskey have their mail sent to Charlotte, North Carolina as they black snake moan all over the country, stomping and storming a sweet strong molasses of what they call their ‘Dark Country Voodoo.’ For them, it’s tour, tour, tour!

Made up of Von Bury’s finely chopped and grinding guitar riffs, and deliciously glazed and fired up by singer Jennifer Lauren’s swamp-siren vocals, their pine and swagger is anchored and swung by drummer Christopher McKinney’s beats and brushes.

Dark Country Voodoo is also the name of their debut, and its combination of barroom beauty and backwoods danger is a potent blend of the previous groups the front duo did time in: For Jennifer, Henry River Honey, and for Von Bury, Lovesucker, Red All Over, and Chelsea Daggers. Christopher was in The Coming Dawn, and Blue Static, among others. Charlotte duo Diamonds and Whiskey is introducing Dark Country Voodoo to the world.
For the album Dark Country Voodoo, they hooked up with Seattle music maven Graig Markel (the Animals at Night, Dead Ship Sailing), a multi-genre producer and engineer with incredibly spontaneous and creative instincts for covering sounds, especially roots music. Von Bury says, ‘He’s world class, pays attention to all the details, literally fills in all the blanks. All the slide work and acoustic guitar work is Graig.’

For further description of the Diamonds and Whiskey alchemy, Von Bury offers up handles ‘Classic alt-country, swampy New Orleans-rooted rock with an indie sensibility.’ ‘It’s a true-blood kind of sound,’ Jennifer says. They tap into the red, red blood of American music, touching base with everything intoxicating and heart-palpitating from The Zac Brown Band, The Black Angels, Allison Kraus, Tanya Tucker, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Darius Rucker, to Garth Brooks.

Jennifer loves her sangria and her guns, and that explains both the raw-sugar pleasuring and forceful kick of her mighty words. She brings her ideas in to Von Bury, who then woodsheds the entire song with her till it’s something brand new they can both be super proud of.

Diamonds and Whiskey is as valuable as their name implies; it’s hard-cost music, and worth experiencing no matter how melancholy or angry it gets, as every moment can spill over into a rich feeling of good changes coming, and life well worth loving.
************

Gladshot
Considering they’ve already worked on everything from a “dystopian rock musical” (Barcode) to songs that scored TV shows on TNT, ABC and MTV – and after wrapping up a live set on WFMU’s Goddamn Dave Hill show where they lit up Dave’s message board and then went on to headline a sold out NYC show – it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that Debb Andrews and Mike Blaxill are at the peak of their creative powers on the new Gladshot album These Are Vitamins. Released in the fall of 2017, its their second effort with super producer John Agnello (Drive by Truckers, Son Volt, Waxahatchee), who continues to perfect the push-and-pull dynamics Mike and Debb perfected on their last EP, Maxwell’s Cool Demon.

It’s something they’ve been working on ever since the two met at a songwriter collective that performed and critiqued one another’s songs. At the time, Mike and his propulsive guitar were on more of a roots-rock tip, and Debb pulled in pop influences and the serious jazz skills that earned her a National Endowment for the Arts nod and lessons with the legendary pianist Joanne Brackeen (a session player and live performer for such esteemed musicians as Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, and Stan Getz).

Now Gladshot can be best described as bold garage band, striking a perfect balance between amaericana and psychedelic music. Not to mention reflecting such varied influences as the Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond, AC/DC, Crowded House, Marvin Gaye, and the road-tested records of Cherry Glazerr, Langhorne Slim, and Speedy Ortiz.

“We each generate our own musical ideas,” the pair explains, “then we get together to decide what will be a song. Once it’s written, one of Debb’s favorite things is coming up with keyboard parts—cool ones that meld into the song, the way Nicky Hopkins does on ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ or ‘She’s a Rainbow’. They inspire her to keep it all lo-fi and simple.”

Barnaby Bright with Alan Black and Russell Howard
Oct 14 @ 7:30 pm

Both classically-trained, the duo has made some cool Americana records, lived in Brooklyn, Nashville and Kansas, toured coast to coast, run out of money, toured Europe, run out of money again, won high-falutin’ prizes for songwriting in New York, generally not argued, done benefit shows for prestigious US AAA radio stations, given away 200k+ tracks on Amazon, kept writing, built an audience, been named one of Amazon’s Top 100 albums of the year, eaten copious amounts of vegetarian food, attracted 17k+ listeners a month on Spotify and FINALLY made a record, ‘This is Life,’ coming in late 2016, which speaks to where they’ve been, who they are, what they want and where they’re going. It’s smart pop with an authentic Americana stamp, not the other way round. Oh yeah, somewhere in there they got married, but they’d rather not talk about that.

Sawyer Fredericks with Violet Bell
Oct 16 @ 7:30 pm

18 year old Singer-songwriter Sawyer Fredericks, hailing from his family’s farm in central New York State, is fast establishing himself as an authentic, original, Americana artist with an old soul. His deep, beyond-his-years lyrics and melodies, raw, soulful vocals, and powerful live performances have attracted an ever growing number of devoted fans of all ages, selling out shows throughout the US. As a folk/blues singer-songwriter, who cut his teeth at local farmers markets, open mics, and iconic New York venues like Caffe Lena, the Towne Crier Cafe, and The Bitter End, Sawyer seemed an unlikely match for reality tv, but quickly won over broad audiences with his genuine delivery and unique arrangements of classic songs, going on to win season 8 of NBC’s The Voice. Fresh from that whirlwind, Sawyer went forward with the release of his major label debut, A Good Storm, with Republic Records, an impressive blend of soulful Folk, blues, and rock, entirely written or cowritten by Sawyer. His 2016 A Good Storm Tour included 62 shows across the US.

For 2017, Sawyer has once again gone independent, is busy crafting his sophomore offering, Hide Your Ghost, due to release this summer, and embarks on the 2017 North American Hide Your Ghost Tour in June. Follow him at www.sawyerfredericks.com, and on FB, IG, and Twitter, to stay updated on new music releases and upcoming shows.
