The Weepies, with Matt the Electrician
Dec 18 @ 7:00 pm

Singer-songwriters Deb Talan & Steve Tannen began writing together the night they met, and soon formed indie band The Weepies. On the strength of their simple yet insightful songwriting and distinctive harmonies, they quietly sold more than 1.5 million records with over 54 million streams on Spotify, 25+ million views on YouTube, and over 110k social media followers. They married and had three children, rarely touring but continuing to release their music; five records over seven years.

Just before Christmas 2013, when their youngest son was 17 months old, Deb Talan was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. She was in chemo by New Year’s Eve.

In 2014, Deb beat cancer, and The Weepies recorded the best album of their career. Coming back from the edge sharpened their skills and focus. At 16 songs and almost an hour long, SIRENS shows a band at the height of its powers.

The couple was unable to travel while Deb was in treatment, so they worked at home, inviting guest musicians to record remotely wherever each musician happened to be, resulting in an unlikely superstar backing band. Players from across the spectrum jumped in, including: Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve (Elvis Costello), Gerry Leonard (David Bowie), Rami Jaffee (Foo Fighters), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), Oliver Kraus (Sia) and Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam), as well as veteran Weepies compatriots Frank Lenz, Eli Thomson, Jon Flaugher, Meg Toohey, and Whynot Jansveld, plus a horn section from New Orleans.

The Vegabonds, Red Dress Amy
Dec 18 @ 7:30 pm

Following three European tours, four full-length albums, and a tour schedule packed with more festivals and venues than ever before, The Vegabonds are forging into their second decade spreading the gospel of pure New South Rock.

The quintet joins LA-based Blue Elan Records with the first album deal of their career. The new record, “V”, symbolizing their fifth release, will debut worldwide in January. Produced by Tom Tapley in Atlanta, The Vegabonds’ highly-anticipated release audibly illustrates their unconventional yet contagious self-titled genre of rock. With Americana, Country, and Rock influences, The Vegabonds’ sound is one that cannot be duplicated, manipulated, or pigeon-holed. After his work producing the band’s critically-acclaimed album “WhatWe’re Made Of” and the “Long Haired Country Boy” single, Tapley’s execution of albums for Blackberry Smoke to Sugarland, Tyler Farr to Mastodon, highlights the best of The Vegabonds’ unique musicianship, vocals, lyrics and sound.

Gold Old War, Beta Radio, Allman Brown

Good Old War has earned the loyalty of an ever-expanding fan base thanks to their captivating live shows touring along side a diverse group of artists including Alison Krauss, Guster, Brandi Carlisle and Dr. Dog.

Karla Davis
Dec 19 @ 7:30 pm

Karla Davis is a soulful singer/songwriter from Monroe, North Carolina. Driven by the church, it was the choir that invoked her musical spirit. Music found Karla just as quickly as her fingers found their home on the fret board of her first guitar just over five years ago.

Karla took a leap of faith in the fall of 2009 when she decided to move to Nashville, TN. In January 2010 Karla was named the national winner of the Colgate Country Showdown and was given the title Best New Act in Country Music. After starting her own independent record label and recording her first two albums, Karla found herself on Season 2 of NBC’s ‘The Voice’ in 2012 where she made it to the top 16 on Team Adam.

Following her success on The Voice, Karla began working with industry veterans Gordon Kennedy and Jeff Balding with whom she released her single ‘I Can’t Sleep Tonight’ in February of 2015. Karla is currently writing and in the studio working on her upcoming EP with Mapletop Entertainment.

Lisa De Novo at Growler USA
Dec 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Lisa began singing and songwriting at a very young age. By age 10, she had 3 albums handwritten in journals. She started performing at community outreaches through music, drama, and dance, then branched out to open mics and solo gigs. “I’ve been in love with music for as long as I can remember. I tried out different career paths, but the only thing that felt right for me was music. Music is a powerful thing. It allows you to get things off your chest while connecting with others on a very deep level.”

Lisa’s influences include Amy Winehouse, Florence and the Machine, Foster the People, Lights, Ed Sheran, Above and Beyond, Odesza, and Coldplay. In October 2016, she released her first solo EP the Stars Align – now available on itunes and spotify. She has done several electronic dance music collaborations with DJ’s all over the world. The songs have more than 300,000 hits on youtube.

The alternative pop/rock band – Lisa De Novo Band – is made up of singer-songwriter Lisa De Novo, lead guitarist Zach Willard, bass player Michael Lanigan, and drummer Mitch Moore. “We’ve officially been a band since April 2017 after I asked the guys to join me at Shakedown Festival. We could tell after the first time we jammed together, that we instantly clicked. The guys heard my songs and added their own unique twists to them! My jaw dropped and I knew we had to make an album.”

The Big Bang marks Lisa De Novo’s first full-length studio album. “Recording was a very difficult process. There were so many setbacks like losing my voice from late night gigs and early morning studio sessions as well as struggling to make time to write and practice.” Lisa worked hard to complete the album with a packed schedule, working more than 60 hours a week. In order to fund the album, she taught music at two different preschools, worked a studio job, hosted open mic nights, played shows, and led worship at her church—with little or no time off. Despite the personal sacrifices and recording challenges, Lisa embraces the art form of the recording process at its core. “Guitar takes were the hardest because there are so many ways to strum a G chord! The harmonies were the most fun because I was able to experiment with new vocal sounds and sing notes I never knew I could sing.’

The Big Bang Album is a unique blend of pop, soul, and alternative rock. Combining Mitch’s metal drum background, Michael’s funk bass techniques, Zach’s progressive rock guitar style, with Lisa’s sweet yet soulful voice, the album evokes a truly organic sound. The album includes 7 full band songs, including “Not Giving Up,” “Cigarette Love Song,” and the crowd favorite “Monkey See, Monkey Do.” There are also 3 acoustic songs that feature different instruments giving the album an exciting dynamic vibe.

Please join them for the Big Bang CD release show on 5/5/18!

*A portion of the proceeds will go to Girls Rock Charlotte – a nonprofit organization that amplifies the confidence of ALL girls and women through the power of music. www.girlsrockclt.org

Howie Day, Alex2e
Dec 20 @ 7:30 pm

Howie Day’s emotionally resonant lyrics and inventive melodies have earned him both critical praise and a legion of devoted fans. He is known for his energetic, heartfelt shows, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into fluttering, high registers, but also grates with real, pleading grit,” as one critic put it. After sales of over a million records and two Top 10 hits, Day is back on the road in support of his new studio album, Lanterns.

A native of Bangor, Maine, Day began playing piano at age five and guitar at age 12. By 15, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after graduating high school, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote, financed and released his first effort, Australia, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. The Boston Globe called Day “gorgeously seasoned, far beyond his years” with “a brave, beautiful singing voice.” During his relentless touring schedule, Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loop-sampling techniques as he performed, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band. He went on to sell over 30,000 copies of Australia as he navigated the independent music scene and continued to hone his craft.

After signing with Epic Records, Day released his major-label debut, Stop All The World Now, and hit the road to support it. The constant promotion paid off: Stop was certified gold in the U.S. and spawned two Top 10 radio hits: “She Says” and the platinum single “Collide.” After three subsequent years of intense worldwide touring, Day moved to Los Angeles and returned to the studio. His next release, Sound the Alarm, built on the emotionally complex spirit of its predecessor and delved into Day’s journey from indie wunderkind to platinum-selling artist. Its lead single, “Be There,” became a staple at modern AC radio.

After parting ways with Epic and relocating to New York City in 2010, Day released the Ceasefire EP on his own label, Daze. Over the next two years, as a reenergized Day toured North America, Australia and Asia, new songs began to emerge and evolve. His fourth full-length album, Lanterns, was recorded in Boston with producer and longtime friend Mike Denneen. Awash with a warm musicality and unique instrumentation, the album also features guest vocals from Aimee Mann. Lanterns was released in April 2015.

Renelvis (free show)
Dec 20 @ 9:00 pm

Renelvis emerged in Charlotte during the early 90s, claiming to be just another Elvis Presley impersonator. While he may not look or talk like your typical Memphis bluesman, all one has to do is listen to him belt out “Hound Dog” or watch him swivel his hips, and you’ll be convinced that The King is back.

Rene will be performing a mix of his original songs and some Elvis favorites, as well as telling stories from his book.

The Shana Blake Band at Smokey Joe’s Cafe
Dec 20 @ 10:00 pm – 11:30 pm

The Shana Blake Band is an innovative new take on the old soul cover band. The ensemble hails from Charlotte, North Carolina and features singer/songwriter Shana Blake (The Near Misses, Wavy Space, Tesser), veteran guitarist Keith Shamel (Virgo Musik, Daily Soul), bassist Dave Eatman (Bellyful, Automatic Chi) and drummer/percussionist Scott Newell (Vonce, Justice League). The expressive vocals and rich textures of the instrumentation fuse coherently to create a sound that’s as smooth as honey, with a hint of R&B, funk, reggae, southern rock, gospel, country, jazz and the blues. The repertoire covers the gamut from emotionally-charged ballads to energetic, danceable grooves. The song choices are anything but ordinary and, along with the original compositions, appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners. An evening with Shana Blake & Pivotal Soul is like a breath of fresh air. Funky fresh air.

Christmas Show with Dane Page, Chip McGee and George Banda
Dec 21 @ 7:30 pm

Dane Page is a singer-songwriter living in Charlotte, North Carolina. Influenced by the traditions of Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie, his music reflects the complexities of modern life while keeping true to the simple tenets of songwriting. Dane’s lyrics weave listeners through Greek mythology, 20th Century literature, and American history while telling stories of love, loss, happiness, and pain. His music pulls from contemporary folk artists like Josh Ritter and Gregory Alan Isakov, but also ventures into sounds reminiscent of The War on Drugs and Tame Impala.

Dane Page continues to tour through the southeast and mid-Atlantic in support of his independently produced EP City to City. A collection of bawdy, rambler tunes perfect for taprooms, bars, and breweries. Selma (Summer 2018) will be his first full-length record. Selma is a more mature album that pushes the boundaries of folk and gives Dane the space to fully develop his sound.

Dane is a storyteller perfect for intimate rooms where audiences can delve into the imagery and lyricism of his songs. The full band—Eric Fellner on bass, Kevin Orlando on guitar, and Josh Kelley on drums—is a dynamic act taking Dane’s solo storytelling ability and adding an infectious blend of folk, rock, and blues capable of filling music halls and festival stages. In either setting, listeners are welcomed into the music and leave feeling like old friends after a bonfire.

The Sammies CD Release Bash, with Parker Gispert from The Whigs
Dec 21 @ 9:00 pm

The Sammies are proud to announce the release of their 4th studio album Bonfire Nightclub.  Recorded in 2017 at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium in Kernersville NC, and coming in at just under 40 minutes, it harkens back to their eponymous first album.  In part due to the fact that The Sammies enlisted famed indie rock producer John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth) to produce/mix/engineer the session, just as he did on that first album.  Brothers Huntley again fire back and forth at one another, taking turns on vocal duties, and at times adding a little “blood harmony” to the mix.

Formed in Charlotte by way of Wadesboro NC, The Sammies have played hundreds of shows all across the United States, from Claremont CA to Boston MA, SXSW to Sundance, and everywhere in between.  With songs placed in movies (Employee of the Month) and TV (Friday Night Lights, Entourage), and albums available for streaming or however you take your music now, come check out the band that Bill Murray would give 3 thumbs up to had he met them.

Peter Rowan
Dec 22 @ 8:00 pm

Grammy-award winner Peter Rowan is a singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades. From his early years playing under the tutelage of Bluegrass veteran Bill Monroe, to his time in Old & In the Way and his breakout as a solo musician and bandleader, Rowan has built a devoted, international fan base through a solid stream of recordings, collaborative projects, and constant touring.

Born in Wayland, Massachusetts to a musical family, Rowan learned to play guitar from his uncle. He spent his teenage years absorbing the sights and sounds of the Hillbilly Ranch, a legendary Country music nightclub in Boston frequented by old-time acts like The Lilly Brothers and Tex Logan. In 1956 Peter Rowan formed his first band, the Cupids, while still in high school.

After three years in college, Rowan left academia to pursue a life in music. Rowan began his professional career in 1963 as the singer, rhythm guitarist and songwriter for the Bluegrass Boys, led by the founding father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe. “One thing I started to like about the Monroe style was that there was a lot more blues in it than other styles of bluegrass,” reflects Rowan. “It was darker. It had more of an edge to it. And yet it still had the ballad tradition in it, and I loved that.”

The late ‘60s and early 70’s saw Rowan involved in a number of rock, folk and bluegrass projects, including Earth Opera, Sea Train, Muleskinner, and the Rowans, where he played alongside brothers Chris and Lorin Rowan. After the Rowan Brothers disbanded, Rowan, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Vassar Clements and John Kahn formed a bluegrass band christened Old & In the Way. It was during this incarnation that Rowan penned the song “Panama Red,” a subsequent hit for the New Riders of the Purple Sage and a classic ever since.

Rowan subsequently embarked on a well-received solo career in the late ‘70s, releasing critically acclaimed records such as Dustbowl Children (a Woody-Guthrie style song cycle about the Great Depression), Yonder (a record of old-time country music in collaboration with ace dobro player, Jerry Douglas) and two extraordinarily fine bluegrass albums, The First Whippoorwill and Bluegrass Boy, as well as High Lonesome Cowboy, a recording of traditional and old-time mountain music with Don Edwards and Norman Blake. Rowan’s recent releases- Quartet, a recording with the phenomenal Tony Rice and Legacy with the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, coupled with a relentless touring schedule have further endeared Peter Rowan to audiences around the world.

Following on the heels of the celebrated album “Crucial Country: Live at Telluride” Peter recorded his second album for Compass entitled “Old School” with memorable new songs such as “Doc Watson Morning” , “Drop The Bone” and “Keepin’ It Between The Lines (Old School)” with members of the current Bluegrass Band plus Chris Henry, Michael Cleveland, Bryan Sutton, Ronnie, Robbie and Del McCoury and more. Since then the prolific singer songwriter has recorded and released Peter Rowan’s Twang an Groove Vol. 1 (his electric band with drummer Jamie Oldacker and bassist Mike Morgan) on There Records, Dharma Blues (produced by John Chelew and including Jack Casady, Jody Stecker, Patrick Korte and Manose Singh performing songs of the Buddhaverse) on Omnivore Records and his newest, My Aloha, also on Omnivore Records.

Internationally, Rowan often performs as a solo singer-songwriter, while stateside, along with solo appearances, he plays in three bands: the Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, a quintet featuring Keith Little, Chris Henry, Blaine Sprouse and Paul Knight; Big Twang Theory and its Texas Cousin Twang n Groove and rock band The Free Mexican Air Force.

Travers Brothership, Downtown Abby & The Echoes
Dec 27 @ 9:00 pm
“This is a band that possesses a soulful magic and heart you don’t find in many young bands. This is real art.’ – Danny Harlen Mote, Lucky Trend Music

Twin brothers Eric and Kyle Travers have been making music and stunning audiences since they first began performing together at 13 years old.

In 2012 the twin brothers formed their latest project, Travers Brothership, an Alternative, Soul, and Funk ensemble based out of Asheville, NC.

It is safe to say The Brothership stands out amongst most acts climbing the charts in the U.S. today. Why do they stand out so boldly amongst the others? They care to make each concert a unique and unforgettable experience. Utilizing the band’s unmatched live energy and superior songwriting, they create a live atmosphere that transforms an audience into a community. A Travers Brothership concert is best described as a wild block party, and this is a party you don’t wanna miss.

Following the success of the ‘I Don’t Mind EP’ the band began touring nationally in 2013 and has since performed 400+ concerts across the United States. The band has shared the stage with many accomplished acts such as: Charles Bradley, Taj Mahal, String Cheese Incident, Blues Traveler, The Marcus King Band, Robert Randolph, Leftover Salmon, Trombone Shorty, Rebirth Brass Band, Dr. John, and many more.

Over the course of two national tours the band began work with Grammy award winning producer, Juan ‘Pericles’ Covaz, and Grammy nominated engineer, Matt Williams. Following recording sessions at Full Sail University in Winter Park, FL and The Eagle Room in Asheville, NC the band’s first album ‘A Way To Survive’ was complete.

‘A Way To Survive’ was released in 2016 to critical acclaim and outstanding reviews. The album has won numerous awards including ‘Best Studio Album of 2016’ at Homegrown Music Network, and has received airplay on radio stations throughout the U.S. and beyond.

Following the success of their first record, the band was voted ‘Best Alternative Band of 2016’ by the readers of Asheville’s Mountain Xpress, confirming the bands status as a staple of the Southeast music scene.

Travers Brothership is currently touring the U.S. in support of ‘A Way To Survive’ and writing songs for their highly anticipated sophomore release.

‘There are hundreds of great bands aiming for the major leagues, but few of them bring such a complete package as Travers Brothership. In this horse race, I’ve found where I’m putting my money.’ – Brian Swenk, Homegrown Music Network

Downtown Abby & The Echoes

DownTown Abby & The Echoes captures the spirit of old soul while emphasizing its youthful energy and fresh songwriting.

Delivering vocals and keyboard is our leading lady, DownTown Abby, Abby Bryant. Laying down the groove are The Echoes with Bailey Faulkner (guitar), Logan Hall (bass), and Steven Cornacchia (drums).

DTA & The Echoes formed in the summer of 2016 in the mountains of North Carolina, taking influence from the work of the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals among many titans of southern soul and Mo-town. Over a year later, the band relocated to Charlotte to bring its fresh take on soul to an ever-growing fan base. With performances at regional festivals and some of NC’s most popular music venues under its belt, DownTown Abby & The Echoes has never been more focused on its mission to bring funky, dance-inducing original tunes to the places you most love to hear music.

The band’s EP, Leavin’ You, brings the energy of a live DTA show to the web, encouraging everyone to hear the exciting new directions modern soul rock is headed.

With powerful vocals and a groovy rhythm section, DownTown Abby & The Echoes is a must-see for all ages and musical preferences.

The Shana Blake Band at Smokey Joe’s Cafe
Dec 27 @ 10:00 pm – 11:30 pm
