Ancient Cities at Heist Brewery
Jun 23 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Formed in North Carolina in 2013 by multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Stephen Warwick, Ancient Cities melds well-crafted lyrics with fuzzed-out guitars, hints of psychedelia, and a pop sensibility.
Warwick gained noteriety in 2010 with his lof-fi folk endeavor titled Talking Machine, receiving local acclaim as best song-writer and landing on Shuffle Magazine’s top 10 list of best albums that year.
Seeking a new musicial outlet, Warwick headed back to the studio and enlisted friends to join him in the for . Towards the end of the recordings, Justin Fedor (The New Familiars) joined Warwick and the two set out as a duo for their first tour under the name Ancient Cities, after a dream Warwick had as a child. July 2014 marked the release of Ancient Cities’ self-titled debut album, and they expanded their live sound with the addition of Justin Faircloth (The Houston Brothers) on organ and synth.
They’ve been touring up and down the east coast for a few years playing club dates as well as festivals such as CMJ Music Marathon, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and the prestegious Newport Folk Festival’s 56th anniversary. They were one of three bands chosen by Converse to play Newport, as well as record at Converse Rubber Tracks Studio in Boston where they started work on their follow-up album Supermoon Blackout. Ancient Cities has been featured in the Vanity Fair and the Village Voice, as well as a series of live videos with famed music sites PASTE Magazine and Live & Breathing. You can catch them this summer/fall out on tour in support of their second album.

JJ Grey & Mofro at NoDa Brewing Co
Jun 24 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

From the days of playing greasy local juke joints to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate, at times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. When you see JJ Grey and his band Mofro live—and you truly, absolutely must—the man is fearless.

‘Just when you think great guitar music is on its way out, there’s always a track or two that keep you holding onto the thin threads that represent today’s indie-rock scene. Gold Connections’ new track “Icarus” is a solid reason to clutch hold of the great roots of guitar music, and to keep fighting for it to stay alive.’

Lisa De Novo at Heist Brewery
Jul 13 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Lisa began singing and songwriting at a very young age. By age 10, she had 3 albums handwritten in journals. She started performing at community outreaches through music, drama, and dance, then branched out to open mics and solo gigs. “I’ve been in love with music for as long as I can remember. I tried out different career paths, but the only thing that felt right for me was music. Music is a powerful thing. It allows you to get things off your chest while connecting with others on a very deep level.”

Lisa’s influences include Amy Winehouse, Florence and the Machine, Foster the People, Lights, Ed Sheran, Above and Beyond, Odesza, and Coldplay. In October 2016, she released her first solo EP the Stars Align – now available on itunes and spotify. She has done several electronic dance music collaborations with DJ’s all over the world. The songs have more than 300,000 hits on youtube.

The alternative pop/rock band – Lisa De Novo Band – is made up of singer-songwriter Lisa De Novo, lead guitarist Zach Willard, bass player Michael Lanigan, and drummer Mitch Moore. “We’ve officially been a band since April 2017 after I asked the guys to join me at Shakedown Festival. We could tell after the first time we jammed together, that we instantly clicked. The guys heard my songs and added their own unique twists to them! My jaw dropped and I knew we had to make an album.”

The Big Bang marks Lisa De Novo’s first full-length studio album. “Recording was a very difficult process. There were so many setbacks like losing my voice from late night gigs and early morning studio sessions as well as struggling to make time to write and practice.” Lisa worked hard to complete the album with a packed schedule, working more than 60 hours a week. In order to fund the album, she taught music at two different preschools, worked a studio job, hosted open mic nights, played shows, and led worship at her church—with little or no time off. Despite the personal sacrifices and recording challenges, Lisa embraces the art form of the recording process at its core. “Guitar takes were the hardest because there are so many ways to strum a G chord! The harmonies were the most fun because I was able to experiment with new vocal sounds and sing notes I never knew I could sing.’

The Big Bang Album is a unique blend of pop, soul, and alternative rock. Combining Mitch’s metal drum background, Michael’s funk bass techniques, Zach’s progressive rock guitar style, with Lisa’s sweet yet soulful voice, the album evokes a truly organic sound. The album includes 7 full band songs, including “Not Giving Up,” “Cigarette Love Song,” and the crowd favorite “Monkey See, Monkey Do.” There are also 3 acoustic songs that feature different instruments giving the album an exciting dynamic vibe.

Please join them for the Big Bang CD release show on 5/5/18!

*A portion of the proceeds will go to Girls Rock Charlotte – a nonprofit organization that amplifies the confidence of ALL girls and women through the power of music. www.girlsrockclt.org

Graham Stone at Find Your Muse Open Mic
Jul 16 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Graham Stone Music is the current solo project of Graham McCune Stoll. Currently based in Richmond, Virginia, Graham recorded and released ‘Until the Day’–an album with ten songs that marked his first solo effort.

Released independently and comprised entirely of original songs from both past and present, Until the Day is an offering that spans a full decade of songwriting.

“Some of these songs were written 10 years ago and some of them were written out on the road with Aubrey the same year I recorded the album.”

The song Flowers in Montana is a road song; written during a trek through Glacier National Park. “It’s really a song to my daughter Katrianna. I’ll never forget the overwhelming need to get those words down on paper. Looking at it now, the song kind of visits the concepts of age and memory. Loneliness and togetherness. Life and death. And all of that just kind of poured itself out of me over the course of a few minutes.”

Juxtapose that against a song like Meaningless–one Graham wrote nearly ten years ago while living in Charlottesville and you’ll have a picture of the continuum this album finds itself spanning. “Meaningless is a kind of story about a man coming to the end of his life and recognizing that much of what he’s given himself to doesn’t really matter once he’s gone. But it’s written through the eyes of a young person who still might be able to learn some from the older man’s realization. I think a couple years back I saw myself somehow as a mix up of those two characters and knew that I wanted to try and make sure the rest of my life was lived less in the futility and meaninglessness that sort of haunts the old man.”

The lyrics and demeanor of this music offer an honesty and a sort of welcoming that directly connect the listener with each song as a story. You can tell straight away that his music was influenced by folk music storytellers like Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and John Prine. It’s also easy to draw stylistic comparisons to modern Americana singer-songwriters like the Avett Brothers or Jason Isbell. But when you ask Graham himself, he actually cites songwriters like Thrice’s Dustin Kensrue and Hot Water Music’s Chuck Ragan.

‘Growing up, I was raised on bluegrass music and the blues. From Ralph Stanley, The Carter Family, Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs to guys like BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Lightning Hopkins. That was stuff my dad listened to, so those are my earliest musical memories. But I remember first hearing the Sex Pistols when I was about twelve and all I remember thinking was that I wanted to listen to songs like that! Ones that I could play easy that were exciting and loud and fast. So I listened to everything I could get my hands on that fit that category and my teen days were spent primarily listening to punk and metal bands. A few of the artists that I would still consider some of my biggest influences today are songwriters from bands I was listening to in high school. Thanks to the songwriters from bands like Thrice and Hotwater Music where now Dustin and Chuck also have solo careers with kind of a different sound but you still get a lot of that same spirit.’

But when asked about his current favorites, Graham goes back to his roots again.

‘I think some of the most important ways people find meaning is in stories that help explain or simply just express the human condition. And my favorite kind of songs are basically just stories with musical accompaniment. Some of the best stories in the world have been written by songwriters and are still being told today. Throughout human history songs and stories have been a way for oral traditions to be passed down. So for me, I owe a lot to John Hurt, Doc Watson, Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris and John Prine. And it’s so inspiring to see how folks today are still carrying the torch. Songs about life and death and joy and sadness, those are songs about being human. Songs that still say something, you know? That kind of stuff influences my songwriting a whole lot and it’s somewhere in my own songs and stories that I find myself in what feels to be like my natural home. I want to keep getting better at saying things and telling stories. Until the Day has songs that are stories are about people, some are about places. Some of the stories are true in a very literal sense and some of them aren’t at all. But writing these songs and playing music helps me remember who I’m meant to be.’

La Santa Cecilia and Chócala
Jul 17 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

La Santa Cecilia consists accordionist and requintero Jose Carlos, bassist Alex Bendana, percussionist Miguel Ramirez and lead vocalist Marisoul, whose captivating voice sings about love, loss and heartbreak. Their influences range from Miles Davis to The Beatles, Zeppelin to Janis Joplin and Mercedes Sosa to Ramon Ayala. Ther common love of music and openness to all genres led them to the concept of La Santa Cecilia in 2007 – named after the patron saint of musicians.

Chócala is a sonic amalgamation of Latin rhythms, rock, and jazz with a touch of tropical psychedelia resulting in an experimental yet approachable sound with an infectious groove. The band is fronted by keyboardist Liza Ortiz who’s powerful lyrics about self-assessment and affirmation are earnest, heartfelt, and entirely in Spanish. Michael Anderson (saxophone), Davey Blackburn (percussion), and Claudio Ortiz (bass) playfully harmonize and explore polyrhythmic soundscapes, offering up novel yet familiar experiences with each song.
