SPIRIT SYSTEM w/ Cheveron, VIA
May 31 @ 10:00 pm – Jun 1 @ 2:00 am
Spirit System:
Spirit System initially began in 2013 as a recording project between Laurie Ruroden (vox, bass, efx) and Eric Gilstrap (gtrs, synth, efx) to reconnect as songwriters after the breakup of their former noise pop band, Telltale. After relocating from Brooklyn, New York to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in the spring 2014 they had fleshed the band out by adding another member, Gary Guthrie (drums, smplr, synth). Spirit System then took a break from regional touring to begin recording their debut album with Jeff Berner (Psychic TV, NAAM) at GaluminumFoil Productions in Brooklyn. At the beginning of the summer 2015, Spirit System released the EP ‘Afterblume’, 4 tracks containing the outtakes of their forthcoming debut full length, ‘Nightfalling’, due to be released March 2016.
Cheveron: Aural assault for your curious mind.
VIA: Many years ago, a boy and a girl met in a small West Texas town. The girl, a long time musician, and the boy, who had never made music ever before, decided to cultivate a sound together. Some years later, they made a move to another small town in North Carolina where they planned to grow themselves and their music. On this small mountain top where they lived, their sound grew, matured, and evolved into what it is now. The rest is still being written…

AKITA presents CULTURE SHIFT 4 w/ The Hawthornes, Doctor Ocular
Jun 1 @ 10:00 pm – Jun 2 @ 2:00 am
AKITA brings you the 4th installment of their Party Culture Shift! The brainchild of drummer Patrick Buckley, the party’s intent is to continually grow the Funk, HipHop, Jam, Reggae, Jazz, R&B and soul scene in the entire southeast.

Akita:
We create music we like in the hopes that you will like it as well and get some spiritual, emotional, intellectual or otherwise positive influence from your listening experience. Catch ya at the next show!
The Hawthornes:
Cementing their place in a burgeoning Charlotte music scene, The Hawthornes are a step forward to music-retro. Fusing imaginative, melodic hooks with sultry vocals, fiery guitars, and luscious grooves, The Hawthornes color the musical winds with unmistaken character. This widely-influenced group of musicians has taken time to craft an album that stretches to the edge of their varied styles, noting that most fans of music can find familiarity in elements of their sound. The band operates in somewhat of an Omni-genre, combining the backgrounds of each individual member’s primary discipline, and marrying them in a sonic-sphere that is equal parts accessible and challenging. From the rhythm patterns and grooves laid by Horace Carney (drummer) and Chris Freeman (bass/vocals) to the intricate chord play of Mike Prescott (guitar/vocals) and alluring melodies of Ade Herbert (vocals/keys), The Hawthornes deliver musical experiences that delight the casual music fan and the audiophile.

Doctor Ocular:
Blending synth and guitar with drum and bass, Doctor Ocular sets original melodies and arrangements of covers with vibes from jamtronica, acid jazz, synth-pop,and roots-rock. Since their inception, DocOc has trekked throughout the Southeast and Midwest, spreading the word of their very own brand of psychedelic rock.

Megan Jean and the KFB present Lounge Act: The Songs of Nirvana as Jazz

In the four years since their last album, Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band have undergone something of an identity crisis. Sure, there are elements that have remained the same: Megan Jean’s hurricane of a voice that can glide from baritone to mezzo soprano without breaking a sweat; the engine-room thrum-and-stomp of her husband Byrne Klay on banjo and bass drum — that’s all intact.

Unified Souls First Anniversary w/ Dj Mark Francis
Jun 8 @ 10:00 pm – Jun 9 @ 2:00 am

We (UNIFIED SOULS) are extremely happy to announce and invite everyone to our first anniversary!!
It is with great excitement that we (UNIFIED SOULS) present to some and introduce to others, for the first time in Charlotte Nc, our brother (MARK FRANCIS)
Once in a lifetime you come across a producer that truly personifies the music genre.
Welcome to the sounds of producer/DJ Mark Francis. Pennsylvania born, New Jersey bred, DJ Mark Francis has become a force to be reckoned with. Right hand to the legendary Timmy Regisford, a resident at Club Shelter, and liaison to so many in dance music, Mark exemplifies the sound and movement of New York’s underground that’s has translated from New York to the world.
An avid music listener and collector, Mark Francis first experienced House Music in 1992, after hearing ‘Follow Me’, by Aly Us, he was intrigued and wanted more of this unique sound. After listening and studying the artistry of the insanely talented DJs, vocalist, and producers that influenced his career such as Omar Abdullah, Tyrone Francis, Timmy Regisford and Jihad Muhammad, and DJ Spen, Mark has developed his own niche; an innate ability to ride and blend tracks that take the dancer on a rhythmic journey as well as create them.
He was inspired by the legendary DJs that came before him like Tony Humphries on 98.7 KISS FM, and Louie Vega on HOT 97. In 2006, he met friend and basketball rival DJ Adam Rios who introduced him and his diverse tunes to DJ Timmy Regisford of NYC’s infamous Club Shelter. It wasn’t until 2008 when he debuted at the WMC Club Shelter Party in Miami, that he was able to share his gifts and joined the Club Shelter family. Affectionately known as the “Human IPod,” Mark Francis’ wonderful musical perception, as well as his passion for Deep, Afro, Soulful House, and R&B remixes have paved the way for a vibrant passionate future in music as a DJ and he has traveled the world from Greece, London, France, Portugal, and Italy spinning in the nightclubs throughout in notorious clubs with his brand and style. He looks forward to continuing to share his energetic musicality venturing into a new movement, embracing all that he has learned from the mentors he studied and surrounded himself around. Be sure to catch him when he arrives close to you to experience the sounds and vibe enter into the energy of DJ Mark Francis

The Underground Open Mic: June Edition
Jun 17 @ 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Come join us for The Underground Open Mic. All performers, styles, genres, and skill level are welcome to signup. Each month will have a featured artist.

Proceeds to benefit the UNDERGROUND Mobile Art Gallery.
The UNDERGROUND Mobile Art Gallery will bring amazing visual, musical, poetic, graphic, and historical works from local and accessible black artist right to Charlotte lower-income neighborhoods.

Our goal is to put an interactive Renaissance style art movement right in the heart of the hood, thus giving the youth in Charlotte’s at risk neighborhoods (where there’s mad talent, but nowhere to cultivate it) the opportunity to work with local artists, musicians, writers, gardeners, and historians on their own turf!

SLEEPWALKERS
Jun 28 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

It was the winter of 2013, when a casual lunch at Burger King manifested the hearts of four lost souls and transformed the gang into an unstoppable courier of smash hits. SLEEPWALKERS, a group of outlaws who rose from the blue collar depths of a glorified suburban landscape, seek to recreate the golden age of songwriting.

Combining the soothing sounds of Yanni with the angelic melodies of Enya, SLEEPWALKERS are sure to be the butter to your bread. Matthew McConaughey says, “SLEEPWALKERS songs are more historically significant than the Declaration of Independence…Nick Cage won’t have to look far to find this National Treasure.” SLEEPWALKERS have diamonds on the soles of their shoes they’re not going to Graceland.

EVENT DETAILS:

  • When: Friday, June 28
  • Time: 7:00pm – 10:00pm
  • Location: River Jam Stage
  • Cost: Free and open to the public
  • Weather: Events are scheduled to proceed rain or shine.  In the event of severe weather, the USNWC reserves the right to reschedule/cancel live music performances.
