Electronic artist/producer Flying Lotus hasn’t released a proper studio album since 2014’s surreal You’re Dead!, but he’s managed to keep plenty busy in the meantime. He put out the gross-out, bizarre film Kuso, worked with Kendrick Lamar, and produced a good bit of Thundercat‘s Drunk. But what the world has been missing is more of his eclectic studio wizardry in the solo album format. Well, breathe easy because today he’s announced a new album is incoming.
On May 24 Flying Lotus will release his newest album Flamagra. The LP will be his sixth overall, and, as always, features a wide assortment of guest features. He’ll get the assist from Solange, George Clinton, David Lynch, Anderson .Paak, and more. And it’ll be spread across a whopping 27 tracks.
Speaking about the theme of the new album, Flying Lotus shared this statement:
“This album has been a refuge for pain and trying to make the most out of that pain. Music can heal and in the wake of that tragedy it reminded me what I’m here to do. As we get older, we start to figure out what our purpose is and embrace it and I want to do good things with my work. I want it to be able to help people through tough times and inspire them to be creative.”
Along with the announcement, Flying Lotus has also given us the first taste of the upcoming album with “Fire Is Coming,” which is the track that features filmmaker David Lynch. It’s not so much a song as it is a introduction into the world of Flamagra, which is sure to be a rather hallucinatory experience of an album. And to further highlight the strangeness of the track, there’s an official video accompaniment directed by Flying Lotus and David Firth. As expected, it’s completely insane and bizarrely terrifying. But, it is here to set a certain tone.
Speaking of striking that tone, Flying Lotus says:
“I’d been working on stuff for the past five years, but it was always all over the place. I’d always had this thematic idea in mind—a lingering concept about fire, an eternal flame sitting on a hill. Some people love it, some people hate it. Some people would go on dates there and some people would burn love letters in the fire. Then I went to this party and heard David Lynch saying the words that he wound up saying on the record. And I was like, ‘that’s it, we’re just going to go in that direction.”
