Spotify has kept up with their Singles Series for a little while now, opening the door for great modern artists to come and record some songs live in studio. It goes like this: band comes in to play one of their songs and one cover song. It’s yielded fantastic recordings from some of the best bands working right now. And now they’ve added the great live band LCD Soundsystem to the series.
For LCD Soundsystem’s session, they performed “Tonite” from last year’s American Dream. It was an early single from the comeback LP. And though it might have been a little underwhelming at first, it has grown to be a high point in the context of the entire album. Undoubtedly, their live take captures the magic of James Murphy’s lyrics and performance. And of course, the band keep things tight too. Their cover is a little different than what most people do. Yes, it is a cover of Chic’s song “I Want Your Love,” but it doubles as a mashup with an LCD Soundsystem original. They’ve combined the song with “Home,” one of the best song’s in their discography, and a key point in their career as it marked the final song on their “final” album before they wound up returning last year. Apparently, this very mashup has become somewhat of a live go-to for the band. And it’s not hard to see why cause it totally rules.
