Natalie Alexander talks country-pop, new EP

Country songstress Natalie Alexander is here to make her mark on the music industry with her versatile songs that all listeners will universally relate to. Striving to make powerful music that evokes a range of emotion, Natalie’s lyrics will undeniably connect to fans of all ages and make each one of them feel like her best friend. Poised to take 2017 by storm, Natalie is ready to show the world her talents and prove she is a force to be reckoned with as she releases her single “Cruel” and its accompanying EP.

Growing up in Santa Cruz, California, Natalie credits being surrounded music from a young age for her love of singing and performing. Growing up with a mother who was classically trained in vocals, and brothers who had a rock band, she learned to play the piano at a very young age. “In one way or another I’ve been performing my whole life. I always loved having an audience. When I was really little I would set up my toys and stuffed animals and perform for them. I started dancing when I was five and continued until I went away to college, performing at competitions and recitals throughout the year. I’m not really sure I ever decided performing was something I wanted to pursue; it was just always very much part of me.”

What got you started in music?

My mom is a talented singer and instilled her love for music in my brothers and me. I’ve been playing piano since I was 8. My brothers have a band that I was involved in managing and that was my introduction to the music industry.

Who were some of your influences growing up and who do you listen to now?
Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift. I still listen to them all, but I also have a very wide music taste. I listen to everything! Country is still definitely my favorite.

With today’s country music being more radio friendly and tending to be “country-pop” – how do you feel your music fits in those different genres?

I personally like the “country-pop” trend, it’s the way artists choose to express themselves and I love that! I think my music is a little more of a traditional county sound, although there are some pop elements on my EP which does keep it current and makes it radio friendly.

What’s the story behind the new single “Cruel?” How has the process been with writing and composing everything and settling on the final EP?
Cruel is the first song I decided to record. I loved it the second I heard it and it has a message that I could relate to and I wanted to be able to share with my audience. It appears to be a song about being mad at a boy but it’s actually really uplifting and is more about stopping the cycle of hurting someone else like you’ve been hurt yourself. In the song I say “if hate’s a choice it ends with me.” I’m really proud of the final product, the EP is a great sampling of what I’m about and the kind of music I want to create. I’m really looking forward to continuing to write and make more music!

What are your plans for the back half of 2017?

I’m writing a lot and continuing to get my EP out there. I’m also coordinating some performance opportunities right now so I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead.

If you could go to dinner with two other musicians of any time, who would they be and why?

Honestly probably third wheel a date with Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd. I really admire them as artists and they seem like such cool people. Would love to meet them one day.
