Earlier this month, the new “supergroup” of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus called boygenius released their debut self-titled EP. The 6 track project is truly the sound of three musicians at a masterful creative point in all their careers. And that’s pretty remarkable honestly considering all three have already put out compelling, enthralling, wonderful albums on their own. It’s not a total surprise though that when 3 artists such as these get together, they wind up making a little EP just as great as anything they’ve done before. The boygenius trio are currently on their tour across the States, which is highly worth seeking out. But in case you miss it, we’ve got the sort of next best thing.
Just a few days ago (yeah, yeah we’re a little late to the party here), boygenius stopped by the NPR offices to play the ongoing, great Tiny Desk Concert series. As is the case with most of these Tiny Desk shows, the band take a stripped-back approach to their performance. They utilize some guitar, mandolin, piano, and their impeccable voices to tackle half of the EP. The result is just further proof at how tight these three are together, and what a gift it is that they decided to form a band. Whether or not there will be a full length boygenius album somewhere down the road is not known at the moment, but we can surely hope. In the meantime, take some time to simply be thankful for this really great music.
