Harriet Brown

Sultry r&b solo artist Harriet Brown is back with a new batch of fully-realized future funk, a slow-burning dispatch from a dayglo dance floor.

Mall of Fortune is his second full-length album, an airtight meditation on anxiety, paranoia and indecisiveness – decision paralysis and the free-flowing guilt that follows.

The album was produced, arranged, composed and performed by Harriet Brown. He plays every note of every instrument, sings every come-hither falsetto flight – save for two felicitous features from singers Ana Roxanne and Felicia Douglass. Pressing play is stepping into a damn-near singular vision, a world apart.

And what a world it is. This album is 14 songs of meticulous and introspective soul from LA’s foremost funk documentarian. Where his debut album was more cosmic, more spiritual, this follow-up is grounded and personal, driven by day-to-day experiences and self-imposed solitude. The best albums sound like emotions registered in real time, then rendered for maximum impact.

Album opener ‘Window Shopping’ lays it out clear – ‘Baby what you want, what you spend your life on / when it’s time oh what kind of fortune are you bringing back home?’ The weight of each decision can cause conniptions, but choosing nothing is no choice at all.

‘Shower Up, Saddle Up’ is a bucket of water in the face, the moment you shake it off and find peace with your dime piece, new cologne and a time piece – you stop worrying what people think and hit the town for some me time.

As personal as the album is, its also a rumination on the deep murky macro mess we’re all in. ‘Cinnamon Sky’ wonders how LA can be this beautiful and this polluted, a sun-soaked biohazard.

‘Hardwalkin’ takes on our growing police state, surveillance and the fear we feel around people who are supposed to protect and serve.

This is a sonically and emotionally eclectic album, a ‘Sign O’ The Times’ for our times. It’s a stew of r&b, soul, funk, and free experimentation, both dense and expansive. Repeated listenings rewarded.

You’ll walk away from Mall of Fortune craving the smell of the food court, the stickiness of the arcade. But no matter what you’re in the mall for, pull your check out, hit the checkout, we close in five minutes.

House Of Waters and Jonathan Scales Fourchestra
Aug 4 @ 7:30 pm
House Of Waters
Lauded as the “Jimi Hendrix of Hammered Dulcimer” by NPR, Max ZT is an innovator of the instrument. Taking his roots from Irish folk music, Max has transplanted his compositional techniques to both Senegal, where he studied the Mandinko technique with the Cissoko griot family, and to India, where he received a grant to study under the santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His fresh perspective and bold experimentalism have been the backbone to beautiful, complex, and genuine compositions, while his unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques.

Moto Fukushima has been playing music for as long as he can remember. Accompanying such greats as Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, and Dave Weckl, he has redefined the role of the bass. With a strong background in jazz improvisation, Western classical music and the African inspired musics of South America, Moto’s playing is an amazing combination of finesse, subtlety, and power.

Drummer Ignacio Rivas Bixio mixes South American rhythms with powerful fusion beats. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ignacio moved to NYC after graduating from Berklee College of Music, and is one of the most sought after drummers on the scene.

House of Waters has scored an Emmy winning documentary for ESPN, and has shared the stage with some of the most influential musical leaders of the century including: Pandit Ravi Shankar, Victor Wooten, Tinariwen, Jimmy Cliff, Snarky Puppy, Karsh Kale, and more.

Their self titled first record on Snarky Puppy’s GroundUP Record Label – House of Waters – debuted at #2 on the iTunes World Music Charts. All About Jazz calls it, “A rare and beautiful gem,” while TimeOutNY calls their performances “A sight to behold.”

PRESS QUOTES:
“…Grasping for definitions is useless with this band. Their genre can only be described by other words like fresh, calm, serene, and bliss. Hearing something this new to me feels like I’m hearing music for the first time all over again.”
Paste Music and Daytrotter

“One of the most unique groups you will ever come across . . . I can only describe their sound as being a sound which one has longed to hear without truly realising it.”
The Bubble

“London’s new favourite band.”
Ticketmaster UK

“House of Waters is a band that is bending the very fabric of the musical universe as we know it.”

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra

Jonathan Scales Fourchestra

Jonathan Scales is one of the most innovative steel pannists on the planet, and is redefining and challenging traditional expectations of his signature instrument. In his hands, the sonic palette of an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropical resorts is radically expanded to mimic the role of horns, piano, vibraphone or marimba due to his stunning, virtuosic technique. Scales’ mesmerizing compositions have captivated listeners and elevated him to the status of a true composer, forging new territory in the medium of instrumental music.

• Latest album PILLAR reached #5 on the iTunes Jazz Chart

• Selected by the U.S. Department of State as a cultural ambassador, with tours in Asia and Africa

• Artist Business of the Year award from Minority Enterprise Development Committee in North Carolina

• Selected as a TEDx speaker

Taylor Kelly

Taylor Kelly

Taylor Kelly was born and raised in the suburbs of Rochester, NY and currently resides in Philadelphia, PA where she is further discovering herself as an artist. She has a voice that blends both the smoothness and rhythmic nature of jazz, soul and funk. Her tasteful songwriting tells tales of truth in hopes to inspire many to love, live and let go. Also a trumpet player, she proves the importance of a strong horn section and hot horn lines and strives for an instrumental-vocal approach, a rhythmic phrasing and an improvisation that is reminiscent of many of her trumpet playing influences (Chet Baker, Roy Hargrove and Miles Davis to name a few). Her musical stylings are reflective of Erykah Badu and Stevie Wonder as they possess what she believes to be the true essence of music- harmonic complexity, strong melodic contour and lyrical honesty with an absolutely relentless underlying groove.
Taylor graduated from Berklee College of Music in May 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in Professional Music where she had diligently studied the vast realm that is music. She leads an 8-piece group that has shared the stage with Moonchild, Becca Stevens, Bahamadia and Georgia Anne Muldrow and has released three albums, her most recent entitled ‘Do U Feel Me’ that released 23 June 2017 (www.taylorkelly.bandcamp.com). Her fourth album, Up Up and Away, releases August 1st 2019.

The Temptations & The Four Tops
Oct 27 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Returning by popular demand, Motown legends The Temptations & The Four Tops are coming back to Charlotte for a legendary night of all their favorite hits!

For more than fifty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world.

“The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater”.

The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the Things You Do” turned the guys into stars.

One of Motown’s most consistent hit-makers, The Four Tops are among the most stable and consistent vocal groups.

Their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving” in 1964, made them stars and their sixties track record on the label is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade. Their songs, soulful and bittersweet, were across-the-board successes. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” a no. 1 R&B and Pop smash in 1965, is one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers.

In 1990, with 24 Top 40 pop hits to their credit, The Four Tops were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Though they would no longer have hits on record, the group continued to be a hit in concert, touring incessantly, a towering testament to the enduring legacy of the Motown Sound they helped shape and define.
