PAT MCGEE

PAT MCGEE

PAT MCGEE

“I never expected any of these legends to say yes, but I figured it was worth a shot,” says PAT MCGEE about his star-studded new self-titled album. “If nothing else, I wanted them to know that I felt they would have been the perfect band for these songs. I have never been a guy that asked for favors or perks in this business, but on this project I definitely swung for the fences and thought to myself, ‘Why not? The worst they can say is ‘no’.”

Fortunately, the iconic players he had hoped to work with gave him a resounding, “Yes!” The dream team McGee assembled includes musical legends Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Danny Kortchmar, and Jeff Pevar (nicknamed “The Section”). Other notable musicians such as Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Blues Traveler’s John Popper, Train’s Pat Monahan, Punchbrother’s Gabe Witcher as well as Pat McGee’s own band contributed to the album’s sound.

Recorded in Los Angeles in 2014, Pat McGee was influenced by the classic albums of the 1970s that were spun in his childhood home. “I was inspired to write a record that was not based on a ‘single’ but on the wholeness of the complete album,” Pat explains. “I was at a friend’s house, listening to what I thought was someone’s playlist on an iPod. When I realized they were spinning full albums on vinyl, I was blown away. The very next day, I decided to buy a record player and picked up the ten records that lit the fire in me to start playing music, including seminal records by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash.”

Channeling the vintage warmth of those recordings, he began writing an album that would have the same timeless quality of singer/songwriter rock from the Laurel Canyon scene of the early 70s.

Once McGee had written enough material for an album, he began to wonder what would happen if he reached out to the musicians who helped to shape his ear. An impossible task, he thought, but he decided to throw caution to the wind and go for it. One by one, the pieces started to fit together and each of them accepted his offer. As though the universe had always intended for this record to be made. “You could tell when we got to the studio that all these guys just loved playing with each other,” McGee recalls. “From the moment that we played the opening warm-up casual jam, I knew that this was going to blow away anything that I could have ever dreamed.”

From the guitar intro of opening track “Bad Idea,” the natural connection between the players was obvious, sounding much more like a band who had been playing together for decades instead of being assembled for just one record. In lieu of the modern process of painstakingly tracking each individual instrument, the band jammed. “I would show them my song idea and they would ask to hear the meaning of the lyric, and 10 minutes later, we had a take on tape,” he says, still in awe of that process. “We never tracked more than two or three takes before moving onto the next song. In all of these moments, I felt like I was witnessing the creation of an iconic classic rock guitar moment, drum part or bass line– it was happening right before my very eyes. And the fact that these guys were making it happen on songs that I wrote is just still so unbelievable to me.”

The song “Overboard” features a guest vocal from Train’s Pat Monahan, and is a perfect example of how things just fell into place for this album, Pat’s fourth solo effort and tenth album overall. “I’ve known Pat since 1996 when Train toured with my band and we’ve kept in touch ever since. Pat knew how important this album was to me, so he offered to sing on the record.” Written for his wife, the song relays the idea of how he tends to go overboard with his feelings for her and his family, at times leading to vulnerable moments. “I was so inspired by listening to those old vinyl records that everything truly just flowed out of me.

Extremely proud of this record, McGee is hard-pressed to choose a favorite track. “I’m sure any artist is going to say this but it’s hard to pick a favorite,” he says. “Certainly there are musical moments that really put a smile on my face, like the mood of ‘Caroline’, the vibe of ‘Four-Door Dynamo’, the funk chops of ‘Kite String’ and the harmonies throughout the entire album from Patrick McAloon and Jonathan Williams…”

McGee started his professional music career in 1995 as leader of Pat McGee Band, touring relentlessly for over ten years all over the United States, including one stretch doing 98 shows in 103 days. The band, dubbed PMB by legions of adoring fans, sold out venues all over the US and shared stages with The Who, Allman Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Counting Crows, Rat Dog, Levon Helm & more. Pat McGee Band even performed for President Clinton.

A big supporter of the US military and all that they do, McGee performed for the USO in Greenland as well as in The Middle East and Africa with Navy Entertainment. McGee and his band were also granted the opportunity to land on The USS Eisenhower to play for 5000 brave men and women serving on the Arabian Sea, certainly a career highlight. “My support of the Navy Entertainment and the USO feels, to me, something that every musician or artist or entertainer should be embracing,” McGee says. “I did not grow up in a military family, although my father did serve in Vietnam and to know the years he spent away from my sister while she was young is something I can relate to when meeting the troops overseas. These experiences have really shed some light on how incredibly difficult their jobs are. The men and women I’ve met while doing these tours really inspire you to go home and strive to be a better person.”

Reflecting back on this opus he’s created with these iconic performers, Pat McGee is proud of what he’s accomplished. “It sure feels good to have a record out right now that I want to share with everyone, and not just because they are songs that I wrote,” he explains. “I truly believe that all of the musicians that played on this album need to be credited for what they do. That seems to be lost in the modern music listening atmosphere.”

“It’s not just that these guys are masters on their instruments, because they certainly are that, it’s that their natural instinct is to put the perfect part down to whatever song they’re working on. That is why they have lasted over 50 years in this business. It’s just remarkable that they’re such a cornerstone of the sound of the American songwriter,” McGee says humbly. These new recordings are an indication that McGee has gained the acceptance and approval of his heros, an enviable feat in modern music.

McGee’s self titled upcoming record, his 10th effort and it’s a doozie. Recorded in Los Angeles in 2014, with a legendary band: Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel, Danny Kortchmar, Jeff Pevar and guests: Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, Blues Traveler’s John Popper, Train’s Pat Monahan, Punchbrother’s Gabe Witcher as well as the PMB powerhouse players!

McGee wrote all the music himself inspired by the classic albums of the 1970’s that he grew up listening to. To land this incredible band, dubbed The Section, for these sessions was truly amazing and you can hear the passion and creativity on each track. These are the same players who helped create the signature sounds of Jackson Browne, James Taylor and so many more iconic artists.

Pat McGee Band was founded in 1995 and released and eight albums (2 on Warner Brothers) and a live DVD. PMB toured relentlessly for ten years all over the United States, in one stretch doing 98 shows in 103 days. They were asked to perform for President Clinton, sold out venues all over the US, shared the stage with The Who, Allman Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Counting Crows, Rat Dog, Levon Helm & more. The band was crushed with the untimely death in 2006 of founding drummer Chris Williams. He was the backbone of the band and an integral part of the signature sound of the group, both live and in the studio. McGee has assembled various star-studded ensembles over the years aand continues to have a focus on the song supported with strong harmonies, percussive acoustic guitars, mandolins as well as a tight rhythm section and tasteful electric guitars.

Pat has performed for USO in Greenland and more recently in The Middle East and Africa with Navy Entertainment. This allowed McGee and his band the opportunity to land on The USS Eisenhower to play for 5000 brave men and women serving on the Arabian Sea–an experience that was a highlight of his career.

Band of Tomorrow

Band of Tomorrow

‘The Band of Tomorrow ping-pongs between genres and weaves together harmonic sections in a way no other band would dare to. In the same way, their pre-written lyrics don’t shy away from any subject, nor does any special guest find it challenging to make a Band of Tomorrow song their own. This Band structures its mission around an unpredictable and transformative experience – always high energy, always premium quality, based often in familiar melodies and intellectual lyrics, but exploring improvised ideas with every new layer.’ – Carly Shields, Ever Upward Entertainment, Denver, CO
ANDY FRASCO & THE U.N. with THE TRONGONE BAND
May 19 @ 8:00 pm

It felt like time to switch gears.  In 2017, Andy Frasco reached a fork in the road. Renowned for a jubilant jambalaya of rule-breaking rock n roll his career kept rolling ahead at full steam. To date, he had released three independent albums, chronicled a German gig in front of 15,000 screaming fans on the recent live opus Songs from the Road, made jaws drop at festivals such as Grandoozy, Firefly, Mountain Jam, Summer Camp, Rock Am Ring, Rock Im Park and Electric Forest, generated millions of streams, launched Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast, and performed at festivals alongside icons such as Peter Frampton, Gary Clark Jr., The Revivalists, Snoop Dog, Dr. Dog, Joe Walsh and Kendrick Lamar, to name a few.  After a string of wild shows (and wilder nights) on tour somewhere in the heart of America, one morning sounded a very loud wakeup call for the singer, songwriter, performer, and namesake of Andy Frasco & The U.N. “I woke up after a five-day bender on cocaine,” he recalls. “This relationship I was in didn’t work out. I bought a house in the Midwest to be close to a girl, but she didn’t trust me. I wouldn’t trust me either, because I was fucking chicks and doing drugs every night on the road. I would take ecstasy just to get out of bed. I was sleep deprived, losing all of my friendships, and fucking overworked. I decided to make a change in my life. I realized that I’m getting older; I couldn’t only be the party guy. I wanted to chronicle my life. I wanted to capture my feelings. I wanted substance in my life and music. I decided to take a step back from this wild life for a second and reevaluate, so I could genuinely enjoy the ride I’m on for the long haul.” The ride ramps up on his third full-length album, the aptly titled Change of Pace. Andy approached recording from a new vantage point encouraged by iconic Widespread Panic bassist and producer Dave Schools.  At sessions in a remote Sonoma County mountain studio in a converted chicken coop of all places, Schools challenged him as a songwriter and lyricist. “Dave sat me down and asked, ‘Who do you want to be? What do you want to be remembered by?’,” recalls Andy. “I never really thought of it that way. He dialed things back for me. He’s become a huge inspiration to me as a musician and a friend. The album began there.” Cutting six songs with Dave, he embarked on something of a “studio tour” to finish Change of Pace. He tapped the talents of Ben Ellman in New Orleans, Charles Goodan in Los Angeles, and Caleb Hawley in New York at Lady Gaga’s Atomic Studios.  As a result, the songs reflect the respective regions. “There’s a grungy Bourbon street feel, hard-working and moody New York energy, and that indie California vibe,” he goes on. “I’m a traveler at the end of the day. I became a musician to travel and give people therapy through music. As part of this revelation, I realized I don’t need to stay at home when I’m off tour. I decided since I’m most comfortable on the road, so I might as well make this record on the road.” The first single “Up/Down” slips from a simmering beat and bass line into a horn-driven swoon. Produced by Goodan, its undeniable refrain proves immediately irresistible as he sings, “Your love is up and down.” “I was just getting through my relationship with that girl from Arkansas,” Andy goes on. “One day, she was happy. The next day, she wasn’t. I speak on the bipolar nature of a relationship. This was the first time I felt that. Normally, I’d be in the next town before things got any further. The song came from an outside point-of-a-view by a guy who never had a real relationship before this in his life!” Meanwhile, the boisterous “Waiting Game” features Schools’ touch and thrives on delightful proclamations such as “I wanna be the man you can tell your momma about!” The theatrical piano chords, cinematic accordion, and barroom chant delivery on “Don’t let the Haters get you down” takes dead aim at “online trolls talking shit from their parents basements.”  The title track “Change of Pace” gallops ahead on tambourine and organ as Andy’s voice stretches to the heavens and back on the admission, “I’m looking for change of pace. Then, I’ll be on my way.” “Everyone has an idea of how you should live your life,” he states. “If you’re dealing with something that you’re not into, try something the complete opposite. Instead of always pondering what you could do tomorrow, do it today.” In the end, this change elevates Andy to a new level. “I’d love for people to connect to the songs in addition to the live show,” he leaves off. “I’m a philosopher and a musician at the end of the day. I want to emulate those aspects in my work. I’m also just a guy trying to find happiness like everyone else is. It’s about being okay with the lows, not getting too high with the highs, and being comfortable in your own skin.”

THE TRONGONE BAND

Start Time: 8:00

Hailing from Richmond, VA, The Trongone Band is touring in support of their 2017 debut album, “Keys to the House”, released on Harmonized Records. With a sound that Paste Magazine likens to the “freak-outs of My Morning Jacket with the Muscle Shoals-inspired Leslie speakers and The Band’s narrative storytelling”, The Trongone Band is turning heads and making an impact on the Southern Rock ‘n’ Soul and Americana scenes. Formed by brothers Andrew and Johnny Trongone with father John Sr on bass, The Trongone Band (tron-GO-knee) has grown from a family affair to a full on touring machine with the addition of keyboardist Ben “Wolfe” White and bassist Chip Hale. In the words of Live for Live Music, “the quartet has come together to create an old-school and all-in-the-family sound reminiscent of The Allman Brothers while still keeping it fresh with their cutting edge original compositions that also infuse funk and blues into the mix.” Keeping with the homegrown vibe, the band nestled into the woods outside of RVA, tapping into Montrose Recording’s Flickinger console, one of only seven remaining in the world. Known as the console that revolutionized the recording industry in the 60s & 70s, the Flickinger provided the warm sounds that turned into “Keys to the House” and brought to life what MusicFestNews described as “imagery of boxcar drifters, rolling hills and dirt roads that are easy to close your eyes and get lost in”. Summer and Fall of 2017 saw The Trongone Band taking “Keys to the House” on the road while touring in support of stalwarts including Umphrey’s McGee, Reckless Kelly, American Aquarium and Cris Jacobs, Having graced the stages of Virginia’s Roosterwalk and FloydFest, Tennessee’s Riverbend Music Festival, The Allman Brothers’ Peach Festival in Pennsylvania, Atlanta’s Sweetwater 420 Fest and Macon’s “Big House Presents Summer Jam”, the band took the show abroad and completed their first full European Tour to close out 2018. This four-piece ensemble may not all be related, but with a chemistry so emphatically discernible, it’s fair to call them brothers. WILLY PORTER

WILLY PORTER

Willy Porter has been turning first time listeners into die hard fans for more than two decades. Willy blurs the line between indie-folk and rock with his searing signature finger-picking guitar sound, absorbing lyrics, and playful, high-energy live performance style. He has shared world stages with music icons Jeff Beck, Tori Amos, and Paul Simon, carving out a successful solo career as an artist who makes music that resonates long after the last guitar chord fades.

From the release of his breakthrough album, 1994’s Dog Eared Dream, to the launch of his own record label, Weasel Records, in 2005, Willy is an artist dedicated to delivering high-test, original musical experiences. His 2015 album, Human Kindness, featured the songs “Train” and “Chippewa Boots,” performed live on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion by Willy and his singing/songwriting partner, Carmen Nickerson. The pair teamed up again in 2016 to make Bonfire to Ash, a record of co-writes produced by Grammy award-winner Ben Wisch (Marc Cohn, Jonatha Brooke).

Equally accomplished as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter, his songs weave a universal perspective about the questions, struggles, and triumphs of human existence. His live shows are guitar-driven events–equal parts grit, soul, and muscle–that are electrifying, dynamic, and wholly original in the way that Willy’s voice blends and fuses with his virtuoso fret work.

Whether in the studio or on stage, Willy Porter gifts listeners with an unforgettable ride, embodying the very best of what live music has to offer.

“If you need another flat-top guitar hero, look no further than Willy Porter, a blindingly fleet and maddeningly nimble player. If you’re trying to get the hang of fingerstyle picking, you’ll either curse the dude or forsake all and follow him.” –Riverfront Times

“I found Willy on iTunes six years ago. Went to see him live and joined the converted.“ — Al Kooper (Bob Dylan/Blood, Sweat & Tears)

“Porter is a dazzling acoustic guitarist with a moody baritone…“ – The Washington Post

“Porter accentuates well – rendered tales with spit – fire – percussive acoustic guitar strumming and fiery color – chord picking.“ – Billboard

CRACKER

CRACKER

Cracker’s tenth and most recent studio effort, the double-album, Berkeley To Bakersfield, finds this uniquely American band traversing two different sides of the California landscape — the northern Bay area and further down-state in Bakersfield.

Despite being less than a five-hour drive from city to city, musically, these two regions couldn’t be further apart from one another. In the late ’70s and ’80s a harder-edged style of rock music emerged from the Bay area, while Bakersfield is renowned for its own iconic twangy country music popularized, most famously, by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard in the ’60s and ’70s. Yet despite these differences, they are both elements that Cracker’s two cofounders, David Lowery and Johnny Hickman, have embraced to some degree on nearly every one of their studio albums over the last two decades. On Berkeley To Bakersfield, however, instead of integrating these two genres together within one disc, they’ve neatly compartmentalized them onto their own respective regionally-titled LPs.

As Lowery explains, ‘On the Berkeley disc the band is the original Cracker lineup — Davey Faragher, Michael Urbano, Johnny and myself. This is the first time this lineup has recorded together in almost 20 years. We began recording this album at East Bay Recorders in Berkeley, CA. For this reason we chose to stylistically focus this disc on the music we most associate with the East Bay: Punk and Garage with some funky undertones. To further match our sense of place we often took an overtly political tone in the lyrics.’

‘This Bakersfield disc represents the ‘California country’ side of the band. Throughout the band’s 24-year history we’ve dabbled in Country and Americana but this time we wanted to pay homage to the particular strain of Country and Country-Rock music that emerges from the inland valleys of California.’

Cracker has been described as a lot of things over the years: alt-rock, Americana, insurgent-country, and have even had the terms punk and classic-rock thrown at them. But more than anything Cracker are survivors. Cofounders Lowery and Hickman have been at it for a quarter of a century — amassing ten studio albums, multiple gold records, thousands of live performances, hit songs that are still in current radio rotation around the globe (‘Low,’ ‘Euro-Trash Girl,’ ‘Get Off This’ and ‘Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out With Me’ to name just a few), and a worldwide fan base — that despite the major sea-changes within the music industry — continues to grow each year.

Jesse Lamar Williams then planted Menastree in the heart of Charlotte North Carolinas art district Noda at the corner of E. 36th St. and N. Davidson Ave. at the prestigious listening room The Evening Muse where they can often be found cultivating the culture in a monthly residency.

THE HACKENSAW BOYS
May 23 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

For almost two decades, the Hackensaw Boys have plowed the asphalt bringing their raw, gritty American vernacular sounds to the music halls and streets across the world. Twenty years later, the group continues their burning hot vision of American roots music into a new age, fueled as much by a rowdy punk spirit as by the traditional masters that first inspired them.

The music began in 1999 when four friends from Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley found their collective ways to the roots music hub of Charlottesville. They didn’t waste time getting going, playing a show on the street the day of their first practice. The group let the good times roll and started adding like-minded people until their ranks reached twelve players for their first US tour. As with the folk and punk traditions which form the foundation of their sound, they’ve always operated more as a collective than a band. All said, twenty-eight members have cycled through the group—you never quite know who might sit in as a guest on any given night.

Helmed by founding member David Sickmen, the Hackensaw Boys have always had more in common with bands like The Clash, who celebrated the working class roots of their own music, than they did with an overly-polished Nashville mainstream. As evidenced in the Hackensaws’ history, their music fit as easily backing Charlie Louvin as it did in backstage jams on tour with Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips.

With their most recent release, a fresh take on Blaze Foley’s “Oval Room,” these roots music stalwarts speak directly to America’s political unrest. Written and recorded by Foley in the 1980s, the song recalls his list of grievances with the Reagan presidency: “Everywhere he goes, make the people mad / Makes the poor man beg, and the rich man glad.” The band was excited to resurrect this protest gem—which was recorded by their friend Thomas Olivier at Studio Americain in Amsterdam—as the words seem more timely than ever.

‘The Nashville based duo have the perfect blend of country and blues (hence their band name) in their music and we can’t get enough of it.’ – Juliet Schroder, Celeb Secrets Country

Blue Honey is the result of the combined efforts of individually lauded performer/songwriters Troy Brooks and Kassie Jordan, a husband and wife duo. The connection between the two is undeniable and can only be found between two people in love. Their harmonies intertwine flawlessly while showcasing Kassie’s powerhouse vocals and Troy’s blues inspired guitar riffs. They have brought that rare connection back into the studio to record their sophomore full-length project, Sweet Rebellion, which was co-produced by Kassie and Troy and includes twelve originals songs. The video for the debut single, “Angels Come Home,” debuted on world renowned outlet The Boot. The release of the new album falls on the heels of a milestone 2018 where they were named one of the “10 Country Artists To Watch in 2018” by The Nashville Knack, were included on The Country Source’s “One To Watch 2018” list and Buzzfeed’s “2018’s Country Music Obsessions” list. Their song “Wherever You Are Tonight” was also recently featured on Spectra Music’s Americana Made: Volume 1 compilation album.

TRAPPER SCHOEPP
May 24 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Trapper Schoepp is a young man who’s befriended a strange and diverse cast of characters during his 27 years. That small army of rogues and rebels, drifters and dreamers, soldiers and schemers populate his songs, their tragedies and comedies, their lives and deaths recalled in his finely etched musical vignettes.

The Minnesota-born, Wisconsin-based tunesmith and teller of tales (both tall and true), just returned with his second effort Rangers & Valentines (Xtra Mile Recordings). The record follows his critically acclaimed 2012 debut Run Engine, Run. That LP earned notices in Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and Paste, with the folks at Huffington Post calling him a “master storyteller” and PBS hailing his “story songs that explore and explode the conventions of rock and roll.”

On Rangers & Valentines, Schoepp defies the limitations of the standard-issue Americana platter, hopping genres – you’ll hear lots of brass, backing singers and B-3 — as the songs build to delirious musical highs. His narratives, meanwhile, find subjects in the narrow margins of society, the strange twists (literal and metaphorical) in the weather, and the vagaries of a troubadour’s transient life – with lyrics that flash a lacerating wit and humanist streak that’s at the core of his craft.

EVENT DETAILS:

  • When: Friday, May 24
  • Time: 7:00pm – 10:00pm
  • Location: River Jam Stage
  • Cost: Free and open to the public
  • Weather: Events are scheduled to proceed rain or shine.  In the event of severe weather, the USNWC reserves the right to reschedule/cancel live music performances.
Gareth Asher Record Release; Jason Adamo
May 24 @ 7:30 pm
Gareth Asher

Gareth Asher

Gareth Asher returns to Charlotte, NC promoting his new album, “Defend the Flame.”

With lyricism reflecting and celebrating the inner struggles we face through life’s smiles and tears, “Defend the Flame” reminds us to accept and release the emotions that can often feel insurmountable within us. This message is one that has no doubt been felt through much of his previous music, but through this album, Gareth lays himself bare in a way that he has not shared before. The honesty in the tone of these new and precious songs is one that will leave you feeling more connected to the self and perhaps a little lighter with the knowledge that you are not alone.

Join us May 24th in welcoming Gareth Asher back to The Evening Muse.

Jason Adamo

Jason Adamo

An interesting thing happens when a talented musician ditches gimmicks and masks; honest, unpretentious, full-bodied music is born. Jason Adamo is a truly soulful singer with inspired lyrics and raspy falsetto. Currently residing in Raleigh, NC, Adamo has lived in New York City and Nashville immersing himself in each cities music and songwriting scene.

Jason Recently received RIAA Gold and Platinum plaques as a songwriter for the song ‘Beautiful Believer’ on Brett Young’s debut album on The Big Machine Label Group.

Adamo’s Joe Cocker-like “bold grit and heart,” and ability to take a captive audience from “engaged silence” to a “floor stomping, rollicking, good time.”

CODDLE CREEK with THE LOCAL BOYS
May 24 @ 8:00 pm

Coddle Creek is a high energy creekgrass band from the foothills of NC in beautiful Coddle Creek! It’s traditional bluegrass music with a kick,we like to play fast and let our light shine bright!!! The sweet harmonies and dueling acoustic guitars of longtime friends Travis Weddington and Adam Lawrence are like no other.  Travis Weddington is from Coddle Creek, NC. He grew up playing traditional bluegrass with his family. Travis then got bit by the blues bug, under the wing of Rusty Barkley in the Part Time Blues Band. Shortly thereafter, Travis started ripping up electric guitar leads for the ‘improvisational project band Duk Tan”. His vocals songwriting and acoustic guitar licks are the icing on the cake in Coddle Creek.  With his original songs, vocals, and acoustic guitar picking, Adam Lawrence is a large part of the sweet sounds of Coddle Creek. After hearing recordings at a young age of his father, Jack Lawrence, and the late Doc Watson, Adam dove into the guitar and hasn’t looked back. He has had the honor to play on stage with many of the great flatpickers of our time, which only increases his desire to play. Adam’s influences include the late Doc Watson and his father, Jack Lawrence, to Django Reinhardt, Clarence White, Bryan Sutton, Stephen Mougin and far too many others to include. Adam also enjoys branching out with many different genres, from progressive blues and most recently jam bands. Adam continues to redefine and create his own style of flatpicking with traveling and playing any kind of music nationwide.  Dave Mclendon, the veteran musician and long time bass player for Duk Tan, hails from the backwoods of Richfield, NC where you can hear the slapping of the cat gut on the hollow body of a sexy stand up fiddle off in the distance, if all is quiet and you put your ear to the ground…Just listen, you’ll hear it!  Steven Davidson has been all around this great country of ours and played with some of the living legends of our time. He’s toured around with Spongecake and the Fluff Ramblers holding down the low end but barely holding his eyes open behind the wheel of their slow moving van! Steven has twice the strings now and he’s using every one of them and chucking his way along with the Coddle Creek crew! He’s a well rounded musician and the perfect fit for this group of misfits, plus, the Mandolin makes him look alot bigger than the bass does! Waylon Bayard will be making appearances from time to time when the spirit of the night comes calling him to lay down a sweet beat to some creekgrass music, like a train chuggin’ down the line! Waylon has been holding down the tempo for some time now with all types of bands and music is his genre, the kid can make any song, no matter how rough, smooth as silk! Waylon is the long time drummer for Duk Tan and has toured the world with some great industrial bands such as Voodou and The Haitian Hate Gods and this has prepared him to go fast and shine with Coddle Creek!  See y’all at the show!!!

THE LOCAL BOYS

Start Time: 8:00

The Local Boys are a band that has been waiting for the appellation ‘Americana’, as ‘Bluegrass’ just doesn’t cover the material they do. With all members of The Local Boys having deep roots in traditional music, they have a love for the musical styles that influenced and evolved from old time, country, and bluegrass.  The Local Boys are fairly standard in their acoustic instrumental arrangement. Lead Guitar, Banjo, Dobro, Rhythm Guitar, and Bass. Additional instruments may be available upon request including mandolin, fiddle, classical violin, cello, and percussion. They can accommodate as a duo, all the way to a large production band! All members of the band are superb lead and harmony vocalists. This gives them the ability to find the perfect combination of voices to render any song.  The Local Boys have performed at Merlefest the last 20 years running. In addition, they’ve hosted the Plaza Stage with the late, Grammy award winning, Tut Taylor. They actively participate in the outreach program, sponsored by Merlefest, bringing music to surrounding area schools. Look for them at the festival this year!

BEN SPARACO AND THE NEW EFFECT
May 25 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Ben Sparaco and The New Effect formed in 2017 when Florida-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist began playing with drummer Anthony Quirk and bassist Adam Discipio. Now based in the flourishing musical oasis of Nashville, TN, Ben and the band have maintained a massive touring schedule, cutting their teeth playing coast to coast in clubs and festivals.

Sparaco spent his teen years making a name for himself in the jam scene of the southeast, playing with members of the Allman Brothers Band, Dead and Company, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and more before he had even turned 21. This included a touring stint in late Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks’ band. After recording his 2016 release “Bring the Jubilee EP” with a Florida-based group of musicians, he moved to Nashville. There, he amassed a group of some of Nashville’s finest to record his debut solo record “Wooden” with producer Ross Holmes (Mumford and Sons, Bruce Hornsby, Warren Haynes), which also featured a guest appearance from Luther Dickinson.

After finalizing The New Effect’s powerful lineup with Berklee College of Music graduates Quirk and Discipio, Sparaco’s songwriting started drifting from his southern rock roots, showing indie rock, new wave, and pop influences, evident on the EP “Greetings, from Ben Sparaco and The New Effect.” Following this with the single “Scared of The Dark” in the fall of 2018, Sparaco and his band have earned glowing press reviews, further establishing themselves as up and comers to watch in the indie rock world.

SNUG 600 : TEMP JOB w/ Indigo De Souza + Icky Bricketts, GASP
May 25 @ 10:00 pm – May 26 @ 2:00 am
TEMP JOB:

Indigo De Souza:
Asheville pop rock

GASP:
‘One foot in the grave, the other dancing wildly about’– serves as a sort of GASP manifesto. A dark litany of worldly cares and psychic damage recounted across an existentialist cocktail of post-punk funk, the dark underbelly of Americana, a veritable bouquet of avant-garde influences, and an eight-limbed percussion section form the core of their baroque new-wave sound.
