Marti Jones & Don Dixon

Marti Jones began her musical journey in her teens in Ohio. After being discovered by Liam Sternberg in the early 80s, she was signed to A&M records where she made three albums that helped define the trajectory of Americana. She moved to RCA in 1990 but after a few more years of relentless touring, she opted for motherhood. Since then she’s made the occasional record, done the occasional tour and spent lots of time painting, her first love.

She became known for her stylish interpretations of songs by Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, David Bowie, Peter Holsapple and Marshall Crenshaw.

Don Dixon: Singer, musician, songwriter, producer and occasional actor. Has twelve solo albums including Most of the Girls Like to Dance But Only Some of the Boys Like To which contains the mid 80s MTV hit “Praying Mantis”. Has songs recorded by Joe Cocker, Ronnie Spector, Hootie & the Blowfish, and the Counting Crows to name a few. For almost two decades, the Hackensaw Boys have plowed the asphalt bringing their raw, gritty American vernacular sounds to the music halls and streets across the world. Twenty years later, the group continues their burning hot vision of American roots music into a new age, fueled as much by a rowdy punk spirit as by the traditional masters that first inspired them.

The music began in 1999 when four friends from Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley found their collective ways to the roots music hub of Charlottesville. They didn’t waste time getting going, playing a show on the street the day of their first practice. The group let the good times roll and started adding like-minded people until their ranks reached twelve players for their first US tour. As with the folk and punk traditions which form the foundation of their sound, they’ve always operated more as a collective than a band. All said, twenty-eight members have cycled through the group—you never quite know who might sit in as a guest on any given night.

Helmed by founding member David Sickmen, the Hackensaw Boys have always had more in common with bands like The Clash, who celebrated the working class roots of their own music, than they did with an overly-polished Nashville mainstream. As evidenced in the Hackensaws’ history, their music fit as easily backing Charlie Louvin as it did in backstage jams on tour with Modest Mouse and the Flaming Lips.

With their most recent release, a fresh take on Blaze Foley’s “Oval Room,” these roots music stalwarts speak directly to America’s political unrest. Written and recorded by Foley in the 1980s, the song recalls his list of grievances with the Reagan presidency: “Everywhere he goes, make the people mad / Makes the poor man beg, and the rich man glad.” The band was excited to resurrect this protest gem—which was recorded by their friend Thomas Olivier at Studio Americain in Amsterdam—as the words seem more timely than ever.

The Shana Blake Band is an innovative new take on the old soul cover band. The ensemble hails from Charlotte, North Carolina and features singer/songwriter Shana Blake (The Near Misses, Wavy Space, Tesser), veteran guitarist Keith Shamel (Virgo Musik, Daily Soul), bassist Dave Eatman (Bellyful, Automatic Chi) and drummer/percussionist Scott Newell (Vonce, Justice League). The expressive vocals and rich textures of the instrumentation fuse coherently to create a sound that’s as smooth as honey, with a hint of R&B, funk, reggae, southern rock, gospel, country, jazz and the blues. The repertoire covers the gamut from emotionally-charged ballads to energetic, danceable grooves. The song choices are anything but ordinary and, along with the original compositions, appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners. ‘The Nashville based duo have the perfect blend of country and blues (hence their band name) in their music and we can’t get enough of it.’ – Juliet Schroder, Celeb Secrets Country

Blue Honey is the result of the combined efforts of individually lauded performer/songwriters Troy Brooks and Kassie Jordan, a husband and wife duo. The connection between the two is undeniable and can only be found between two people in love. Their harmonies intertwine flawlessly while showcasing Kassie’s powerhouse vocals and Troy’s blues inspired guitar riffs. They have brought that rare connection back into the studio to record their sophomore full-length project, Sweet Rebellion, which was co-produced by Kassie and Troy and includes twelve originals songs. The video for the debut single, “Angels Come Home,” debuted on world renowned outlet The Boot. The release of the new album falls on the heels of a milestone 2018 where they were named one of the “10 Country Artists To Watch in 2018” by The Nashville Knack, were included on The Country Source’s “One To Watch 2018” list and Buzzfeed’s “2018’s Country Music Obsessions” list. Their song “Wherever You Are Tonight” was also recently featured on Spectra Music’s Americana Made: Volume 1 compilation album.

May 24 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Trapper Schoepp is a young man who’s befriended a strange and diverse cast of characters during his 27 years. That small army of rogues and rebels, drifters and dreamers, soldiers and schemers populate his songs, their tragedies and comedies, their lives and deaths recalled in his finely etched musical vignettes.

The Minnesota-born, Wisconsin-based tunesmith and teller of tales (both tall and true), just returned with his second effort Rangers & Valentines (Xtra Mile Recordings). The record follows his critically acclaimed 2012 debut Run Engine, Run. That LP earned notices in Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and Paste, with the folks at Huffington Post calling him a “master storyteller” and PBS hailing his “story songs that explore and explode the conventions of rock and roll.”

On Rangers & Valentines, Schoepp defies the limitations of the standard-issue Americana platter, hopping genres – you’ll hear lots of brass, backing singers and B-3 — as the songs build to delirious musical highs. His narratives, meanwhile, find subjects in the narrow margins of society, the strange twists (literal and metaphorical) in the weather, and the vagaries of a troubadour’s transient life – with lyrics that flash a lacerating wit and humanist streak that’s at the core of his craft.

Gareth Asher Record Release; Jason Adamo

Gareth Asher

Gareth Asher

Gareth Asher returns to Charlotte, NC promoting his new album, “Defend the Flame.”

With lyricism reflecting and celebrating the inner struggles we face through life’s smiles and tears, “Defend the Flame” reminds us to accept and release the emotions that can often feel insurmountable within us. This message is one that has no doubt been felt through much of his previous music, but through this album, Gareth lays himself bare in a way that he has not shared before. The honesty in the tone of these new and precious songs is one that will leave you feeling more connected to the self and perhaps a little lighter with the knowledge that you are not alone.

Join us May 24th in welcoming Gareth Asher back to The Evening Muse.

Jason Adamo

Jason Adamo

An interesting thing happens when a talented musician ditches gimmicks and masks; honest, unpretentious, full-bodied music is born. Jason Adamo is a truly soulful singer with inspired lyrics and raspy falsetto. Currently residing in Raleigh, NC, Adamo has lived in New York City and Nashville immersing himself in each cities music and songwriting scene.

Jason Recently received RIAA Gold and Platinum plaques as a songwriter for the song ‘Beautiful Believer’ on Brett Young’s debut album on The Big Machine Label Group.

Adamo’s Joe Cocker-like “bold grit and heart,” and ability to take a captive audience from “engaged silence” to a “floor stomping, rollicking, good time.”

May 24 @ 8:00 pm

Coddle Creek is a high energy creekgrass band from the foothills of NC in beautiful Coddle Creek! It’s traditional bluegrass music with a kick,we like to play fast and let our light shine bright!!! The sweet harmonies and dueling acoustic guitars of longtime friends Travis Weddington and Adam Lawrence are like no other.  Travis Weddington is from Coddle Creek, NC. He grew up playing traditional bluegrass with his family. Travis then got bit by the blues bug, under the wing of Rusty Barkley in the Part Time Blues Band. Shortly thereafter, Travis started ripping up electric guitar leads for the ‘improvisational project band Duk Tan”. His vocals songwriting and acoustic guitar licks are the icing on the cake in Coddle Creek.  With his original songs, vocals, and acoustic guitar picking, Adam Lawrence is a large part of the sweet sounds of Coddle Creek. After hearing recordings at a young age of his father, Jack Lawrence, and the late Doc Watson, Adam dove into the guitar and hasn’t looked back. He has had the honor to play on stage with many of the great flatpickers of our time, which only increases his desire to play. Adam’s influences include the late Doc Watson and his father, Jack Lawrence, to Django Reinhardt, Clarence White, Bryan Sutton, Stephen Mougin and far too many others to include. Adam also enjoys branching out with many different genres, from progressive blues and most recently jam bands. Adam continues to redefine and create his own style of flatpicking with traveling and playing any kind of music nationwide.  Dave Mclendon, the veteran musician and long time bass player for Duk Tan, hails from the backwoods of Richfield, NC where you can hear the slapping of the cat gut on the hollow body of a sexy stand up fiddle off in the distance, if all is quiet and you put your ear to the ground…Just listen, you’ll hear it!  Steven Davidson has been all around this great country of ours and played with some of the living legends of our time. He’s toured around with Spongecake and the Fluff Ramblers holding down the low end but barely holding his eyes open behind the wheel of their slow moving van! Steven has twice the strings now and he’s using every one of them and chucking his way along with the Coddle Creek crew! He’s a well rounded musician and the perfect fit for this group of misfits, plus, the Mandolin makes him look alot bigger than the bass does! Waylon Bayard will be making appearances from time to time when the spirit of the night comes calling him to lay down a sweet beat to some creekgrass music, like a train chuggin’ down the line! Waylon has been holding down the tempo for some time now with all types of bands and music is his genre, the kid can make any song, no matter how rough, smooth as silk! Waylon is the long time drummer for Duk Tan and has toured the world with some great industrial bands such as Voodou and The Haitian Hate Gods and this has prepared him to go fast and shine with Coddle Creek!  See y’all at the show!!!

Start Time: 8:00

The Local Boys are a band that has been waiting for the appellation ‘Americana’, as ‘Bluegrass’ just doesn’t cover the material they do. With all members of The Local Boys having deep roots in traditional music, they have a love for the musical styles that influenced and evolved from old time, country, and bluegrass.  The Local Boys are fairly standard in their acoustic instrumental arrangement. Lead Guitar, Banjo, Dobro, Rhythm Guitar, and Bass. Additional instruments may be available upon request including mandolin, fiddle, classical violin, cello, and percussion. They can accommodate as a duo, all the way to a large production band! All members of the band are superb lead and harmony vocalists. This gives them the ability to find the perfect combination of voices to render any song.  The Local Boys have performed at Merlefest the last 20 years running. In addition, they’ve hosted the Plaza Stage with the late, Grammy award winning, Tut Taylor. They actively participate in the outreach program, sponsored by Merlefest, bringing music to surrounding area schools. Look for them at the festival this year!

Ben Sparaco and The New Effect formed in 2017 when Florida-born singer, songwriter, and guitarist began playing with drummer Anthony Quirk and bassist Adam Discipio. Now based in the flourishing musical oasis of Nashville, TN, Ben and the band have maintained a massive touring schedule, cutting their teeth playing coast to coast in clubs and festivals.

Sparaco spent his teen years making a name for himself in the jam scene of the southeast, playing with members of the Allman Brothers Band, Dead and Company, Tedeschi Trucks Band, and more before he had even turned 21. This included a touring stint in late Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks’ band. After recording his 2016 release “Bring the Jubilee EP” with a Florida-based group of musicians, he moved to Nashville. There, he amassed a group of some of Nashville’s finest to record his debut solo record “Wooden” with producer Ross Holmes (Mumford and Sons, Bruce Hornsby, Warren Haynes), which also featured a guest appearance from Luther Dickinson.

After finalizing The New Effect’s powerful lineup with Berklee College of Music graduates Quirk and Discipio, Sparaco’s songwriting started drifting from his southern rock roots, showing indie rock, new wave, and pop influences, evident on the EP “Greetings, from Ben Sparaco and The New Effect.” Following this with the single “Scared of The Dark” in the fall of 2018, Sparaco and his band have earned glowing press reviews, further establishing themselves as up and comers to watch in the indie rock world.

Indigo De Souza:
Asheville pop rock

‘One foot in the grave, the other dancing wildly about’– serves as a sort of GASP manifesto. A dark litany of worldly cares and psychic damage recounted across an existentialist cocktail of post-punk funk, the dark underbelly of Americana, a veritable bouquet of avant-garde influences, and an eight-limbed percussion section form the core of their baroque new-wave sound.

Monty Mak, fronted by Charlotte Native Singer/Songwriter Monty Makarow, melds voice, instrument and story together to create interesting and complex layers of rhythm, beat and experience. The band itself, a union of family and friends, brings their individual talents to Makarow’s haunting scenes from songs such as Mystical Child and In Her Own Blood. In Calhoun we are reminded of Makarow’s roots while California sets us dreaming of other lives. The upbeat Papa keeps your feet moving while daring you to follow the story of a young girls struggle to connect.

However your ear perceives it, MONTY MAK has much to offer – a true and explosive fusion of sound and story.

Between the potency of his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals and his piercing, expert guitar work, New Orleans’ Anders Osborne is a true musical treasure. He is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today. Guitar Player calls him “the poet laureate of Louisiana’s fertile roots music scene.” New Orleans’ Gambit Weekly has honored Osborne as the Entertainer Of The Year. OffBeat named him the Crescent City’s Best Guitarist for the third year in a row, and the Best Songwriter for the second straight year. Osborne also won Song Of The Year for his composition, Louisiana Gold.

A powerful live performer, the musician has won over fans through non-stop touring as well as a heralded collaboration with the North Mississippi Allstars & Southern Soul Assembly.

Since his recording debut in 1989, Osborne has written virtually all of his own material and contributed memorable songs to a wide variety of artists. Two tunes co-written by Osborne appear on Keb Mo’s Grammy-winning 1999 release Slow Down. Country superstar Tim McGraw scored a #1 hit with Anders’ song Watch The Wind Blow By. Osborne’s compositions have been covered by artists as diverse as Brad Paisley, Tab Benoit, Jonny Lang, Edwin McCain, Sam Bush, Trombone Shorty and Aaron Neville and Kim Carnes. His songs have appeared in multiple feature films. He can also be seen performing in an episode of HBO’s New Orleans-based drama, Treme.

Grizzly Goat; The New Rustics
May 29 @ 7:30 pm
Grizzly Goat

Grizzly Goat

“The band’s music speaks to those who fine solace in the woods, find awe in the great expanse of the desert, who can hear the mountains calling to them.”–Tahoe on Stage, Reno, NV

Grizzly Goat’s music is as the band’s name suggests, undomesticated. Grizzly’s blend of folk-rock spans the entire breadth of the Americana genre; from soft and sincere campfire ballads to rocking electric harmonica solos on top of pounding drums and flailing banjo.

The band is hardworking and tireless. They’ve brought their rootsy compositions from coast to coast in their white passenger van. Whether at a festival or a small scale BBQ joint, Grizzly Goat’s aim is to connect with their audience on an individual level, building a relationship with each listener.

The New Rustics

The New Rustics

Singer/songwriter Jeff Robinson may not have the image you would think of for a southern rock style band, but don’t judge a book by it’s cover! A NC native who has in the past called Charlotte home, now leads a new Americana/roots rock band ‘The New Rustics’, who have been compared to legendary artists such as The Allman Brothers, Tom Petty, Uncle Tupelo, and Arlo Guthrie among many others. Basing their music off of classics in an attempt to bring back a southern rock genre that people still long for, The New Rustics have added a modern day twist to a classic rock style. Fusing elements of country, rock, and folk, intertwined with light jams and meaningful lyrics, The New Rustics are making their way in a highly competitive industry. ‘I sing about home a lot, because well, almost everyone can relate to that. There is definitely a theme to my songs that if you pay attention you will hear; traveling, family, music, becoming the best version of yourself, mistakes made, and of course, girls, haha.’

Remember the urban legend of the boy next door that played records all day, and at night kept the neighborhood up with songs of his own? He left home one day and was never heard from again. You heard he moved to the big city, lived in cheap motels, ate dollar hamburgers, worked the boulevard with ex-models, thorazine freaks, transvestites, mothers, fathers, drunks, junkies and punk rockers alike. Only, this story is no urban fairytale, it’s the true-life journey of American rapper Mickey Avalon has taken on his path to realize his present day success.

Avalon struggled through many long, lonely, desperate nights under the dizzying city lights but made a personal vow that he would never forget the magic of things he loved the most in this world: his first fix, his first girl, and most importantly the first time he rocked a microphone. Mickey Avalon has done whatever it took to get him to and off Hollywood Blvd and is now inviting everyone into his world.

Mickey Avalon is known to the world as one of the hottest underground American rappers and has become a fan-favorite in part because of his back-story; Avalon’s family upbringing was considered tumultuous. Avalon’s family history starts with paternal grandparents, Holocaust survivors, who endured lasting injuries from their imprisonment at Auschwitz. Avalon grew up in Hollywood, California with his sister. His parents had a hard life and previously abused drugs; his dad was a rock-music-lover heroin addict and his mom a concert ticket and pot dealer, a profession he acquired at age 14. In his late teens, the rapper (born Yeshe Perl) became an Orthodox Jew and tried to be a good teenager. By his early 20s, he had married, had a daughter, shaved his beard and moved to Portland, Oregon, where he turned to prostitution, giving sexually pleasure to fund a raging smack habit. While in Portland, tragedy struck his family: his sister died of a heroin overdose and his father was killed in a car accident by a driver who was under the influence of alcohol.

After the deaths of Avalon’s two family members, he decided to move back to Los Angeles and tried to clean up his act, wanting more out of life. He was befriended by ex-MTV VJ Simon Rex (aka Dirt Nasty) who encouraged Avalon to pursue his passion of Hip-Hop and collaborate with him on some tracks. The two quickly began passing out demos to Hollywood clubs and developed a following among fans of the Los Angeles nightclub scene. Soon after the guerilla promotions tactics, Avalon signed with Interscope Records/Killer Records/MySpace in 2005. After signing the first-ever Interscope/Myspace record deal, Avalon debuted his self-entitled album in 2006, which showcased his unique rhyming style and focused on experiences on the streets, with drugs, and prostitution. He was also a member of the Dyslexic Speedreaders, a rap group which also included rappers Dirt Nasty, Andre Legacy, and Beardo, who all appear in Avalon’s music video, ‘Fuckin’ ‘Em All’.

In his short time on the music scene, Avalon has collaborated with many artists such as Young Jeezy and Jermaine Dupri for a recent Boost Mobile commercial. Early in Avalon’s music career, he collaborated with the Happy Mondays on their 2007 album Uncle Dysfunktional, providing vocals on the track “Deviants”. In addition, Avalon co-wrote Unwritten Law’s radio hit, “Shoulda Known Better,” and provided vocals for a remix version which has been released on Unwritten Law’s “Best Of” album, The Hit List. Avalon’s songs have been featured in several film and television projects including the 2008 movie “Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay,” his song “Jane Fonda” was featured briefly in an episode of HBO original series “Entourage,” and his song “My Dick” was featured in the end credit for the HBO original series “Hung.” On the stage, Avalon has opened up for great music artists including Red Hot Chili Peppers and Travis Barker.

Mickey Avalon has been featured in several magazines including Blender, BPM, LA Weekly, Skinnie as ‘America’s Glam Rapper’. He recently performed in several events this year including fashion mogul Christian Audigier’s on the opening day of the annual MAGIC Marketplace 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Avalon performed hits and fan favorites ‘Jane Fonda,’ ‘So Rich, So Pretty,’ ‘Mr. Right’ and sneak previews of two new songs, ‘Fast Life’ and ‘Stroke Me’ from his highly anticipated second album featuring new collaborations with Kid Rock, Katy Perry(Kitty Perry) and Travis Barker and production by mega-hit producer Dr. Luke. Known for his cult following and non-stop tour schedule, Avalon met a man who shares similar likes of music named DJ Mackey who he befriended in 2006. The rapper recently came off a 20-city run on the ‘Blazed and Confused’ summer tour alongside Snoop Dogg and Slightly Stoopid, and DJ Mackey as his DJ on tour. Avalon is set to release his new single “Stroke Me” to radio this month and is put the finishing touches on his upcoming album tentatively entitled “ELECTRIC GIGAGLO” scheduled for a February 2010 release.

Simon Rex was first introduced to television audiences as an MTV VJ. Soon after, Simon hit fame and popularity delving into acting on shows such as Felicity, Jack and Jill, and What I Like About You. Rex also made guest appearances on Baywatch, Everwood, and Summerland and starred in the Lifetime Series, Monarch Cove. He has also acted in feature films including Scary Movie 3, Karate Dog, Superhero Movie, Scary Movie 4 Hotel California, King Of The Avenue, and Scary Movie 5.

As his alter ego “Dirty Nasty,” actor, musician, producer, and comedian, Simon Rex has developed a die-hard and rabid fan-base across the world since the release of his debut rap-comedy albums 2007 release. Dirt’s second album (2010’s “Nasty As I Wanna Be”) debuted and stayed at the top of Billboard’s comedy charts for weeks and featured guests such as Ke$ha, LMFAO and others.

His music and persona have excitedly received a cult following which are not only dominant on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and iTunes; but at his sold out shows and concerts across the globe.

Jonathan Scales is one of the most innovative steel pannists on the planet, and is redefining and challenging traditional expectations of his signature instrument. In his hands, the sonic palette of an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropical resorts is radically expanded to mimic the role of horns, piano, vibraphone or marimba due to his stunning, virtuosic technique. Scales’ mesmerizing compositions have captivated listeners and elevated him to the status of a true composer, forging new territory in the medium of instrumental music. Although Scales’ writing produces songs that are ultimately accessible and danceable, the compositions can be remarkably complex and difficult to perform. As a result, the power trio whimsically named Jonathan Scales Fourchestra has always had a fluid lineup top-notch musicians, and even included an “all-star” version with bassist MonoNeon (Prince, Ghost Note), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg) and percussionist Weedie Braimah (Trombone Shorty, Nth Power), as well as a number of other talented marquee value players. Throughout these changes, Scales has demonstrated remarkable perseverance and persistence, a topic that he presented in a TED Talk, while continuing to write and develop his craft and touring the North American and European club and festival circuit—as well as dates in Japan, Central America and The Caribbean. Scales also represented the United States through the Department of State as a musical ambassador in a four week concert tour of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Indonesia in early 2017, an honor for which he was chosen from among three hundred finalists. Read Less
