Orlando punk outfit Debt Neglector have just dropped a new cover of the classic song by The Clash “I’m So Bored With The U.S.A.” The track comes from a place of both celebration and condemnation. The band are celebrating the release of their new EP The Kids Are Pissed, which dropped a couple weeks back on Smartpunk Records. It’s also “celebrating” or “condemning” the recent midterm elections, which was a real mixed bag in terms of wins and losses.
The 5 track The Kids Are Pissed EP has an overarching theme of outrage. Debt Neglector takes aim at the outpouring of hate rising up in our country filtered through energetic, biting punk music. So it should come as no surprise that the band have opted to cover a political song with “I’m So Bored With The U.S.A.” Speaking about their choice of cover, the band shared this statement:
“We decided to cover this song for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the Clash rip. They have always stuck out to me as the “right way” to do punk rock. None of this “punk is meant to be offensive” trash. It’s socially conscious. Joe Strummer was smart and he spoke for the less fortunate and you could tell that his heart was really behind it. He’s one of those larger than life characters that only come around once or twice in a generation. Secondly, the song is great and I think has aged really well to represent what’s going on in America today. It deals with violence and the constant outpouring of bad news that we’ve come to expect from our country. It can be desensitizing watching all the stories unfold day after day of another shooting or another hate crime. It would be nice to have something to be excited about in the upcoming midterms, but for now we’re just exhausted by all the bad news.”
