Jay Som takes a surreal “Nighttime Drive” in new video

In just a couple of weeks, Jay Som will be releasing her sophomore studio album Anak Ko. If you’re already familiar with her based on her great 2017 debut Everybody Works, you know the goodness that is sure to await on the new LP. And already we can say that with some sort of confidence as both singles she’s shared have been the perfect compositions for her style. Today, she continues that streak with the third single “Nighttime Drive.”

“Nighttime Drive” does a lot of what you expect a Jay Som song to do throughout much of its runtime. Her vocals are hazy, soft, and perfectly layered into the laid back atmosphere of the instrumentals. It’s not the more upbeat side of her music, but it still retains that smooth yet homespun quality that makes her such a standout. But it’s the final minute of the song that shines brightest, as the song morphs into a string section to close things even more sweetly than they started.

The new single comes accompanied with a bizarre video featuring some daydreaming, traveling, and a hilariously off-putting dancing alien. Give it a watch down below.

Anak Ko is out August 23 via Polyvinyl. Pre-order it now.
